Failure to Launch (1/3 of millennials lives w/parents)
Independent Women's Forum ^ | 12 February 2014 | Patrice J. Lee

President likes to refer to us as grown children and is quick to boast that because of his ObamaCare plan we can stay on our parents’ health insurance plans until we’re 26.

But this is a generation that remembers typing papers on word processors and tearing the edges off dot matrix paper. We weren’t the first on the information super highway but once we got a license, we took over the road. Facebook has tracked every day of our lives since college and Twitter turned us into citizen reporters. We also have degrees – some of us multiple degrees- but we racked up five- and six-digits worth of debt along the way. We are Millennials.

With our penchant for technology, our idealism, and our education, one question we are grappling with is why so many of our classmates are still living at home with mom and dad?

The U.S. Department of Education released a report recently that tracked the progress of Millennials who were high school sophomores in 2002 over the past decade. This report provides a snapshot into the lives of older Millennials and our achievement toward life’s milestones. In short, despite our idealism, aptitude, and drive, many haven’t gone very far past “Go” and that’s an issue for our elected leaders.

This is the group that will elect the next Hitler when he promises to forgive their student loans and create government jobs for everyone with Art History and Women’s Studies degrees.

Pre 1960 Traditional families were a working father, stay at home mother. Then came the latch key kids and two working parents (if they stayed together that is).

We’re heading towards the next evolution of the family. Both parents and their adult children working.

Unintended consequences — perhaps we’ll start taking better care of our parents.

Someone has to study Art History or there would be no Art History.

It’s a classic “Mrs.” Degree.

/For those of you afraid of book learnin’, a “Mrs.” degree is obtained by social-climbing girls sent to expensive schools to obtain a professional husband.
//most of my male students entering the professions are looking for other professionals—nurses are very popular
///go figure

And Pre-1940 Traditional Families were working father, mother, and grandfather while grandma watched the kids and there were generally at least a couple of other working relatives in the family as well.

But they are not looking for work, so technically they are not unemployed...

Really, most of the professionals I know marry within the profession, docs to docs, lawyer to lawyer. In fact local law school stopped the lawyer/nurse mixer 40 years ago.

Have some self-respect. They are hiring in the Dakotas.

I was talking about social climbers, specifically.

Def: families straining to send their daughters to an expensive school (like mine) SPECIFICALLY so the daughters can marry up and won’t have to strain to do the same.

It’s very bad motivation for getting a degree.

Also, my more promising students tend to law school or grad programs. A nurse wife can work anywhere and help them finish professional school before they, the wife, burns out.

It’s an unfortunate, but practical, scenario. Much better than debt.

Or, they can take their time and work their way through, as did Yours Truly. Being a lifelong learner requires a very long planning view, which is rare.

I was "lectured" by a family member before Obama was elected and during the late months of W's Presidency that "our" children we not going to have a better life than we had. This would be the first time in American history that this would be the case whereas the subsequent generations didn't have it better and that we "had" to elect Obama to ensure this would not happen.

I think everyone here knows what electing a non-natural born citizen socialist did to our children's chances of having a better life than ours. The usurper has done so much damage it is scary.

Nurses are not working anywhere anymore. Very difficult for new grads to get jobs and the nurse job market is deflating.

This term is one of the reasons why we are where we are - "adult children"

An utterly disgusting term

When they are young we push sex education and all kinds of millstone earning "knowledge" upon them and then when they are older we treat them like they are infants.

Nurses are in hugh demand here.

I have several older friends who returned to nursing work because they couldn’t resist the money. Male and NICU nurses are really making out.

Not here, students have to go out of state and get some experience.

Here in the Triangle, with its very highly-developed medical system (there are three major medical schools within 20 miles of where I teach), the shortage is severe. Also, up in Chicago and in Idaho, where I have nursing friends.

They’re even talking about bringing in foreign nurses, for the routine stuff.

“Nurses are not working anywhere anymore. Very difficult for new grads to get jobs and the nurse job market is deflating.”

That is one field where the outsourcing of work to foreigners has gone on for more than half a century; when Richard Speck killed a bunch of Filipino nursing students back in the late 50s/early 60s, they were already importing cheap replacements for American nurses.

I think this is definitely a reflection of the declining standard of living we’ve been seeing for years; the idea of starting a family or buying a home is off the table for many young Americans. Those doing well economically know that their hold is precarious, while others don’t assume things will get better in the foreseeable future.

This last evolution of the family also includes pets replacing children; many female co-workers are already in that mode (raising pets, looking after their parents). For the larger WASP culture, this is the last evolution of the family before extinction; it is unfolding before our eyes, and the foreigners are being imported to replace them.

Ummmm, when my children reached adulthood, they did not stop being my children.

adult children as used in context meant ‘offspring’ not ‘incapable’. So adult children == adult offspring == you should have no problem with that concept.

I think we should concentrate on helping our children today so they can make a better tomorrow for themselves — not just doing things in their name for tomorrow. Tomorrow is always a day away.

When Canada moved fully over to their current healthcare system in the late seventies, there were busloads of Canadian nurses who were traveling to us to work for they had lost their jobs in the nationalized system.
