Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) Section 222g Visa Overstays and INA Section 212(a)(9)(B) Aliens Unlawfully Present both discuss your scenario where an alien (non-immigrant) enters the U.S. legally but later loses that legal status.
It looks like your definition of violations of the INA under those sections are administrative in nature. Since the INA is a law passed by the Congress; I consider those violations to be crimes.
And there you have the reason for my earlier statements. Which, by the way, I still support. When you break a law, regardless of penalty, you have committed a crime. It really frosts my biscuits to have people come in here and try to downplay a serious problem by tossing out a strawman argument, know what I mean?
