I have staples that will last for several months. I do not live in a metropolitan area. I know how to hunt and fish and both of these bounties are near my home. Most of my neighbors are the same. I as the majority of my neighbors are well versed in the use of firearms. We will survive and we pray our skills are never needed.

“..people 5 miles away might be entirely unaffected.”

I wonder though on the supply routes for food, etc. into Seattle from points south along I-5. Although I-5 was shut down a few years ago for a week or so due to flooding and we survived that okay. But it would be several months I would think to get it open after a major lahar.

But still - a pretty localized event. I guess for some perspective look at Hurricane Katrina. A HUGE area was put into chaos, but Civilization didn’t crumble.

If your plan doesn't include clan, you have no viable plan. FORM MILITIA.

Even the Mexicans are learning this, and they don't have the concept of militia in their history or culture.

In my opinion, The Twilight Zone was the best television show ever.

I have enjoyed from the time I was a kid until just a few weeks ago when I saw it again last.

What makes it so fascinating is how so many of the episodes appear to be a window into the future, and that window was looking at us.

My favorite episode, the one that blows my mind every single time I see it, is “The Obsolete Man”.

I am amazed at the people flooding the stores before a storm. Do they REALLY not have enough cans of soup, beans, cereal, bottles of water to get them through what will only be a few days, if that? Sometimes I think they don’t know WHAT else to do so they just go crazy. I’ll bet most of them have enough essentials in their cupboards. I know no one who plays it so close to the edge that they’ll starve if they cannot get out for a couple of days.

Yes, starring Burgess Meredith. Wonderful Actor.

He also did the Episode where he was the last Man on Earth, looking forward to reading all those Books, and then of course he breaks his Glasses.

He did a few other Episodes I believe. Lots of up and coming Actors did that series.

Of course I remember when he played the Penguin on the Batman TV Show.

Take a look at Patriot Nurse’s You Tubes. She gives classes for those who prep. She did a blunt rundown in one video about how things would go down, deathwise. It was not wrapped in cotton candy. It pissed off some. Truth hurts.

When we still lived in the Northern Sierras, we were over-ran by Bay area people. One snowflake, and the store was wiped out... of stuff you needed electricity to keep and prepare. laughing... They had wood stoves removed when they bought a place. PG&E cut power off when the sun shined too brightly. A minor storm meant at least 3 days without power. No wood stove, no heat, no cook stove or wood stove to warm food and make coffee on, etc. Most went back “home” to the Bay area. Sadly, they always came back.

Sadly, most Americans do not have the skills to get through 72 hours, let alone anything that lasts longer.

A morning smile or a cry which ever fits the bill.

Dear Lois,

Aug. 12 - Moved into our new home in Pennsylvania. It is so beautiful here. The hills and river valleys are so picturesque. I have a beautiful old oak tree in my front yard. Can hardly wait to see the change in the seasons. This is truly God’s Country.

Oct. 14 - Pennsylvania is such a gorgeous place to live, one of the real special places on Earth. The leaves are turning a multitude of different colors. I love all of the shades of reds, oranges and yellows, they are so bright. I want to walk through all of the beautiful hills and spot some white tail deer. They are so graceful; certainly they must be the most peaceful creatures on Earth. This must be paradise.

Nov. 11 - Deer season opens this week. I can’t imagine why anyone would want to shoot these elegant animals. They are the very symbol of peace and tranquility here. I hope it snows soon. I love it here!

Dec. 2 - It snowed last night. I woke to the usual wonderful sight: everything covered in a beautiful blanket of white. The oak tree is magnificent. It looks like a postcard. We went out and swept the snow from the steps and driveway. The air is so crisp, clean and refreshing. We had a snowball fight. I won, and the snowplow came down the street. He must have gotten too close to the driveway because we had to go out and shovel the end of the driveway again. What a beautiful place. Nature in harmony. I love it here!

Dec. 12 - More snow last night. I love it! The plow did his cute little trick again. What a rascal. A winter wonderland. I love it here!

Dec. 19 - More snow - couldn’t get out of the driveway to get to work in time. I’m exhausted from all of the shoveling. And that snowplow!

Dec. 21 - More of that white shit coming down. I’ve got blisters on my hands and a kink in my back. I think that the snowplow driver waits around the corner until I’m done shoveling the driveway. Asshole.

Dec. 25 - White Christmas? More freakin’ snow. If I ever get my hands on the son of a bitch who drives that snowplow, I swear I’ll castrate him. And why don’t they use more salt on these roads to melt this crap??

Dec. 28 - It hasn’t stopped snowing since Christmas. I have been inside since then, except of course when that SOB “Snowplow Harry” comes by. Can’t go anywhere, cars are buried up to the windows. Weather man says to expect another 10 inches. Do you have any idea how many shovelfuls 10 inches is??

Jan. 1 - Happy New Year? The way it’s coming down it won’t melt until the 4th of July! The snowplow got stuck down the road and the shithead actually had the balls to come and ask to borrow a shovel! I told him I’d broken 6 already this season.

Jan. 4 - Finally got out of the house. We went to the store to get some food and a goddamn deer ran out in front of my car and I hit the bastard.

It did $3,000 in damage to the car. Those beasts ought to be killed. The hunters should have a longer season if you ask me.

Jan. 27 - Warmed up a little and rained today. The rain turned the snow into ice and the weight of it broke the main limb of the oak tree in the front yard and it went through the roof. I should have cut that old piece of shit into fireplace wood when I had the chance.

May 23 - Took my car to the local garage. Would you believe the whole underside of the car is rusted away from all of that damn salt they dump on the road? Car looks like a bashed up, heap of rusted cow shit.

June 10 - Sold the car, the house, and moved to Florida. I can’t imagine why anyone in their freakin’ mind would ever want to live in the God forsaken State of Pennsylvania.

In defense of good southerners in the Atlanta area, I must say.....

I was shopping in one of those grocery stores in the burbs just north of Atlanta late Monday afternoon just before the storm hit. Being on a low-salt diet, we don’t do well with canned goods (very high salt content), so getting fresh veggies if possible was important. The store was packed with shoppers, shelves were not totally empty, but getting there fast. I had to settle for veggies that were not my favorites, but that was okay (author of article was wrong, corn and asparagus were popular and already gone, as were tomatoes, potatoes, and all the fruit except apples and oranges which are in big supply right now.

I didn’t see any fights or pushing and shoving, but actually the opposite. People seemed even more friendly than usual, talking, smiling, apologizing for the crowded isle causing accidentally bumping. Being helpful, a very tall man stopped and offered to help me get an item on the top shelf that I was struggling to reach.

I saw a lady with her buggy full to overflowing and another lady asking her if she really needed that much food for just a few days, and the lady replied that because she lived close to the main road she wanted plenty of extra food in case there were stranded drivers in this storm who needed help and so she could feed them. The other lady then said, that maybe she should get some extra food to neighbors who might need it.

I have to be honest..... there may have been some instances in the “hood” of fighting and violence, there always is, and it doesn’t take an incoming storm to provoke it,they shoot people in bar parking lots on normal Friday nights. Just be aware that there is another side to Atlanta. It’s not always a racial or income difference, but an attitude difference.

Eric Ramirez, a snow plow driver on Long Island, said an irate man went so far as to rack a shotgun Sunday and threaten to shoot him because he was piling snow in front of the man’s Manorhaven home.

A very common experience in my area, not the gun part but plows covering and recovering driveway entrances, it's illegal to shovel it back into the street too.

Having been through every major and minor hurricane since Camille and through to Katrina, what you describe is the norm in the South. We have isolated pockets of problems (New Orleans) but everyone here is well armed and people get real civil when disaster happens.

I suspect that in this area, wild game will be bagged and consumed at a speed that will stun everyone that doesn't pay attention to the lessons of history and age-old calculations of how much land it takes to sustain even small groups of people. When every able-bodied human tramps off with whatever weapon they can scrounge to shoot at anything they can see, It'll get interesting (to say the least). Us prairie-dwellers may already be killing each other over the ever-dwindling supply of firewood by that time.
