California law proposal would put health warning labels on soda

Would you drink that soda if you were reminded it could harm your health? A California lawmaker wants to highlight the obesity risk that the sugary drinks bring with a new warning label.

State Sen. Bill Monning proposed a bill on Thursday that would require health warning labels on soda or fruit drinks that contain added sweeteners that are 75 or more calories per 12 ounces.

The SB1000 bill's hypothetical warning label would read: “STATE OF CALIFORNIA SAFETY WARNING: Drinking beverages with added sugar(s) contributes to obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay.”

If passed, the law would start on July 1, 2015.

“When the science is this conclusive, the state of California has a responsibility to take steps to protect consumers,” said Monning, according to the Los Angeles Times. “As with tobacco and alcohol warnings, this legislation will give Californians essential information they need to make healthier choices.”

Monning added at a press conference Friday morning that he believed that warning labels “will face less resistance in the Legislature” than a proposed tax, according to the Sacramento Bee.

The California Medical Association, California Center for Public Health Advocacy, California Black Health Network and the Latino Coalition for a Healthy California are listed as co-sponsors of the bill.

So if the product was naturally sweet, not added sweeteners, it is okay?

Selective rules designed to help one group and hurt another, because the somebody in the government decided they could.

We don't need the government to pick winners and loser for us.

Fast food restaurants in California are already required to put the calorie intake next to everything on their menus. Wonder how many people that has prevented from being obese?

followed shortly thereafter by additional taxes so that ‘education’ can be funded to get people to not drink soda

States that border CA should put up warning signs at their borders.

How about putting together a 100 year water plan or an energy plan or rebuilding the freeway system?

These hippies are burying their heads in the sand and passing feel good legislation while the State goes bankrupt and runs out of water and energy.

Instead we have billions of dollars going to a fast train to nowhere and they think we need to force companies to warn people that drinking a six pack of Coke a day might make you fat.

THEY THINK EVERYBODY IN AMERICA IS DUMBER THAN THEM.

Unfortunately they have enough stupid people to keep electing these bozos to office.

How many languages are these warning labels going to be printed in?

Is there a special gay and lesbian warning, because most lesbians I have seen are huge.

They should put a warning label on all “You are now entering California” signs.

” California may be dangerous to your mental health.”

As long as we can tattoo target markings in the forehead of each and every liberal, I see no problem with this.

After all, they (liberals) present a danger also...a much greater danger.

Are we going to see similar warnings on bread, potatoes, and pasta? A carb is a carb, after all, the body can’t tell the difference.

Or at least on fruit juices? Or other high-carb beverages, like beer?

You’re absolutely correct. There are few sane areas left in this country due to the insanity of liberalism and the chaos of the 60s.

Cigarette smoking is WAY down -- almost non-existent from what I can see. May or may not be related to the warnings on packs.
