America is not the only nation roiled by immigration debates. England, like many Western nations, is also in the midst of a heated one.
Douglas Murray, one of England's leading conservative intellectuals, has just made a major contribution to the discussion in his country.
In a thought-provoking speech, Murray argued that the people of England are "giving up our culture" and "giving up our identity" due to high levels of immigration. He warned that soon, we may unfortunately say that "the peoples of Britain and Europe have lost their place in the world."
The forum for Murray's speech was a debate in Oxford University in January. "It's going to require quite a lot of fairly clear, tough, frank thinking" for Britain to confront questions about immigration, Murray began. He pointed out that he is "not against immigration," but that the speed and rate of immigration have been far too high for far too long...
...Taking aim at what has become a dogma among Western elites, Murray went on to reject the notion that England is "a nation of immigrants."
There is a motif that this country has always been a nation of immigrants. That is not true. It is not true. For most of this country's history, there was a very homogenous group of people on these islands. The idea that what is happening now is what has always happened is simply a fib...
..."I think it is right for people to have a place they call home, an identity that they are proud of. I think it for all people around the world, and I think it for the people of this country," Murray concluded, to rousing applause.

I think the headline has it backward: first you give up your culture and identity, then you get destructive immigration policies.
Not yet.
Teddy Kennedy and company decided to let this horse out of the barn back in 1965.
Finally someone gets it right.
I have family overseas in the UK. They tell me the Brits are this close o accepting Sharia Law. And you know how they set precedents or other countries including our own.the Muzzies have infiltrated int othe inner core of British society and are forcing themselves into positions of power using terrorist tactics. They are trying to do the same here by infiltrating our educational facilities from kindergarten through college selling diversity (which is the complete opposite of what we will have once they close the door and turn the lock)
Not many. Damned few, in fact.
Immigration is greasy and brings in talent. Illegal immigration is deadly. The USA was started by immigrants. Let’s keep this in the perspective of the people that came here looking for the land of liberty. When it becomes the land of handouts, like the UK, then its a problem. Think of what we learned by bringing the physicists to America after WWI and WWII. Open immigration is detrimental, picking and choosing those who want to contribute to science and freedom is honorable.
A couple iphone typos there. Apologies...
Since we are in a global religious war with Islam, the Islamites should all go back to their beloved Middle East. And we need to bring our military out of the Middle East. Let the Islamites kill their wives, daughters, sisters, and neighbors. Just get them out of our country!
We don't need 1.2 million legal immigrants a year, most of whom are poor and uneducated. Legal immigration must be cut drastically and we need a merit based system, not a kinship system like we have now. 87% of the 1.2 million legal immigrants are minorities as classified by the USG, which entitles them to affirmative action, minority business set asides, etc. Immigrants and minorities vote more than two to one for the Dems.
Legal immigrants use the welfare system to a much greater degree than the native born. In 1970 one in 21 was foreign-born in this country; today it is one in 8, the highest it has been in 90 years; and within a decade it will be one in 7, the highest in our history.
The USA was started by immigrants.
No, it was started by colonists or settlers who were primarily British subjects. Almost all of the original Founders were born in the US.
Think of what we learned by bringing the physicists to America after WWI and WWII.
We don't need to bring in 1.2 million immigrants a year to get a few hundred of the best and brightest. Currently, we have 45 million foreign born in this country.
Open immigration is detrimental, picking and choosing those who want to contribute to science and freedom is honorable.
I agree. Immigration to the US is a privilege, not a right. And our immigration policies should serve the national interests.
I live in a suburban CA neighborhood near the southern border. The vast majority of the people I see at the market, on the street, at the clinics, and elsewhere are Mexican. Clerks at gas stations and convenience stores barely speak English: English is not required because most of the customers are Mexican. Even though it’s near the border, when the majority is Mexican by a wide majority, it’s a strong indication of the trend in the rest of the state. And that trend is extending to the nation. I’m not anti-Mexican; I say, Mexico for the Mexicans. But when did we become a part of Mexico?
A fib? More like a deliberate, bald-faced, evil LIE.
Same where I live, (LA area.) I hardly ever hear English spoken with an American accent. I so seldom see a blonde or a redhead, I do a double-take when I do. (And this used to be considered the land of blonde surfers and beach bunnies.) The songs and announcements on the PA systems in the stores are all in Spanish. Most of the white males I see are beggars on the street.
Get ready, America, soon to come to your town, if it hasn’t already. And it didn’t have to happen. We LET it happen, because we were afraid of being called racist.
'Scuse me, China. Just using you as an example.
We never stopped BEING a part of Mexico, according to La Raza.
We took it from them fair and square. They're taaking it back but they're not playing fair.
