Last week's jobs report showed that our economic recovery has made some significant gains. For the 47th consecutive month the private sector added jobs, causing the unemployment rate to fall to 6.6 percent. While this news is encouraging, it offers little relief for job seekers who are still struggling as we continue to dig out of the Great Recession. The hope of a job in the future does not pay the bills due today.
Republicans in Washington have shown little regard for the 1.7 million Americans who have been cut off from emergency unemployment insurance after Congress failed to extend their benefits. Those cuts hit closer to home when you realize that means over 4,300 Central Coast residents will be denied access to the program -- 1,450 in Santa Cruz County, 2,442 people in Monterey County and 414 in San Benito County.
This is not some broad economic indicator that is hard to conceptualize. That number represents members of our community who for no fault of their own are unable to find work during these tough times. They are our friends and neighbors who are struggling to put food on their families table and to pay their bills.

how about the number 2.8? That is the average number of unemployed persons available for every job opening.
But Sam Farr is totally supportive of amnesty for illegal aliens. Won't they be filling some of these job openings? How are we helping American unemployed by bringing in more workers into the country?
The unemployment rate dropped to 6.6%? Wow, doing my happy dance.
Except I don’t believe that for a minute.
I used to live in Carmel Valley. I actually knew him before he started his political career. He was a doosh back in the 70’s and apparently is still one today.
As a matter of fact, I thought he had died some years ago and am surprised he is still around.

Farr may be a liberal (I don’t know, I am not familiar with him at all) but the GOP has been out to lunch, about jobs heading to every other country in the world.
America needs jobs.
Now. Jobs.
In 2009, 71.1% of all illegal alien households w/children were on welfare.
According to liberals, the primary role of illegal aliens in the American economy is to vote Democrat and cash government checks.
In this capacity, they are no threat to American workers...
Who gives a crap about California. They voted for this administration...
500+ jobs found in 95060 (within 25 miles)
Maybe people don’t want to work. Nancy Pelosi says we don’t have to.
Funny, I don't remember voting that way, but using your illogic I guess we should just say who gives a crap about a lot of the U.S. By the way where are you from? Just wondering if we should give a crap?
What, exactly has the GOP done to turn its back? Obama got his stimulus. He got his extended unemployment benefits. He got Obamacare. He has rammed through environmental, energy and illegal immigration policies. He took over General Motors and student loans. He got it all. If anything, the GOP has not had any success in slowing down Obamanomics. This is Barack Obama’s economy. Lock, stock and barrel.
Hey Sammy! KMA! It’s your boy who put us in this predicament you idiot! Why don’t you read a paper or watch FOX once in a while, MORON!
When I lived in Sam Farr’s district I was always amazed that he kept being elected. I met him once and thought he was a real doofus.
“Funny, I don’t remember voting that way”
I understand where you are coming from. I realize not everyone in California voted for this SOB and the rest of the democrats.
However, until the people of California (collectively) feel the pain, they will vote the way they did... Any beef you have is with the rest of the citizens of your state.
“They are our friends and neighbors who are struggling to put food on their families table and to pay their bills - and who voted for Obama.”
There fixed it.
Based on his understanding of economics, I'd say you are partially correct - his brain died. His body didn't.
Sam Farr probably thinks jobseekers want handouts instead of jobs
Sam Farr just another reason that California sucks and has so many people leaving the state. About the only ones entering California these days are coming across the southern border and are illegal
I thought everyone in Santa Cruz made a living growing pot.
No, Sam, you can’t have it both ways. If all these jobs have been created, why extend UB?
Sam is ignorsnt, and he is turning his back on “job seekers” encouraging them to seek endless unemployment benefits instead of a paycheck.
