Olmpic medals per capita
Medals Per Capita ^ | Craig Nevill-Manning

All time & each Olympics

As you scan the Olympic medal tally, one thing stands out: larger countries tend to win more medals. An obvious exception, especially in 2008, is Australia, who won the fifth largest number of medals with a population of 23 million, 52nd largest of Olympic countries. The obvious next question is: who leads the world in medals per capita? This site, which is updated daily during the Olympics, provides the answer.

Very interesting to see the high numbers for the countries that once comprised the USSR.

We come out 22nd on the list.

Reminds me of those international comparisons on academic achievement.

Not only are we an ignorant nation, we’re out of shape, too.

Without reading this article, I am going to guess Norway.

The list is dominated by cold countries.

I can't stand the Olympics. Anorexic women bellyflopping on various gym apparatus and bursting in tears as their scores are read. Extremely effeminate men dressed in tights and 75 pound girly-girls in pink dresses spinning around on ice skates and bursting into tears as their scores are read.

Who makes up these scores anyway? What makes the difference between a 7.8 and a 7.9? I can't tell.

People on skis hurtling down some mountainside while some Swiss clock records their times in thousandths of seconds and people on the sidelines are ringing cowbells and making funny hooting noises. It seems like they've been doing the same thing since 1972. Now they've introduced snow-boarding and "toboggans".

And what is that sport where they push that really heavy donut-shaped stone down a sheet of ice while two people with brooms sweep a path for it?

It's all a dreadful bore.

Ding, ding, ding! You are correct, Norway is #1, with 14 medals and a pop of just over 5 million.

That’s why the dems push immigration reform.

An ignorant population is their best weapon.

Yesterday I saw both a South Korean and a Ukrainian win medals under the Russian flag.

There’s too much Olympic carpetbagging going on to care about medal counts:

No we just aren’t that into the sports they play in the Olympics. There’s a few, more in the summer games thanks to swimming and basketball, but for the most part our top end athletes are playing other sports they don’t play in the Olympics. So we don’t get medals, we get football players, baseball players, NASCAR drivers, basketball of course which is good for one medal. We’re not sending our top athletes into skiing, or figure skating, or gymnastics, or track and field, not even the X Games which we invented but now other countries are catching up. It’s hard to get medals with your second and third tier athlete.

Yeah, but I’m betting about 90% of Norwegians are active in some sort of winter sport from the age of three...

Or to put it another way, if there would ever be a Pot Olympics, expect Jamaica to be high on the list. (Yes, there’s a pun hidden in there somewhere.)

Tell that to the 3 American men who nailed the 3 medals for Slope Style. Love it!

Which is an X Game, which we invented, as I said later in the same post.
