Nave or navel? National Cathedral goes off deep end
OneNewsNow.com ^ | January 21, 2014 | Robert Knight

The Episcopal Church-run National Cathedral in Northwest Washington, DC, has hosted many events in its storied history, from Martin Luther King's final Sunday sermon before his assassination, to U.S. presidents' state funerals.

Last week, it was the site of "Seeing Deeper," a five-day exploration of "expansiveness, immediacy, and insight." Before we get into that, here's a brief history.

(snip)

"You see a cathedral, but you don't see anything being done with it. I'm trying to get this place back to its roots."

So said the Very Rev. Gary Hall, dean of the cathedral, who is quickly turning the place for the nation's most solemn occasions into Flip Wilson's Church of What's Happening Now.

Don't believe me? Try this snippet from The Washington Post:

'"I want to skateboard down it — or have a paper airplane contest,' Hall, a tall, white-haired priest, said Monday as he watched about 100 people practice tai chi in the football-field-long, rectangular nave."

That's right. The nave -- the heart of the church leading to the altar. They took out the seats to stage activities including yoga sessions during five days of "Seeing Deeper." I wonder if they have given thought to renaming the nave as the "navel," as in contemplating one's own?

The decadent Henry VIII, founder of the Episcopal church would smile and approve of this strange priest’s plan to turn this Episcopal church into a dance hall where “youths clad in bikinis rave to loud music”.

At least they aren’t getting their own warships.

Hmmmmm. Worshiper Warships. The nave navel navy.

I think I’d better shut-up now before someone takes this seriously...

Leftwing ideology is all about the destruction of Christianity. It’s a shame when Christian clergy join in and help that effort.

He’s also the guy who announced that gay marriages would be performed in the National Cathedral. On television that evening, he said “My emails are in favor of it!” Now that’s a scientific survey of Christian believers right there. /sarc

Gary is just continuing the ECUSA dedication to being “trendier than thou.”

Of course, that’s why they have lost millions of communicants and endowments are not keeping up with expenses. Nothing like driving away the faithful with faithlessness.

Hoo boy! Talk about being lost in the wilderness.

Why don't they try something really novel like preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ and honoring Him? That would probably do wonders for their attendance.

They could even legitimately call themselves a "church" and drop the pretense.

(Full disclosure: I am LCMS Lutheran; I have never been an Episcopalian, though I have been substitute-organist in Episcopal churches perhaps a half-dozen times, the last time being 7-8 years ago.)

I think it is the ultimate, pitiful irony of all this, that the National Cathedral, in order to regain its standing as an orthodox-in-doctrine Christian church, would have to break off its American affiliation and come under the bishopric (if that is the correct term) of John Guernsey, who oversees those Episcopal churches in the US who have come under the [Anglican] Church of Uganda.

Every time I have gone to DC I have made a side trip to the Cathedral, but the last few times I visited, I felt perhaps a little like Peter or Paul, the saints for whom the Cathedral is named, at the Temple: they belonged there, God was worshipped there, but the doctrine there was all twisted--and both would have known Jesus' prophecy, that ultimately the Temple had to be destroyed by pagans, in order for God to have a place where He could be worshipped in Spirit and in truth. I hope the same fate does not have to befall the Cathedral.

Now THERE was a time.

I literally began to cry while watching this video.

All the further I had to read. I believe the pictures of Clintoon coming out charring his Bible were taken here.

Agree, fwdude. I’m Catholic, but am very sad to see what this congregation is becoming under the present leadership. In the past the Washtington Cathedral always had grace and dignity. I’d visited a few times before, and had been impressed how well they carry off important “national services” like the interfaith service after 9/11 and Reagan’s funeral. It’s starting to become absolutely unbearable to look and see what’s happening.

Unbelievable, and sadly, it's going to get a lot worse. Evil always waxes worse. It is a bottomless pit of degradation, ardently trying to outdo itself.

Get the history correct. KH8 and his court of protestant sympathetic advisors founded the Church of England (Anglicanism). The Epsicopal Church was founded in the U.S. after the American Revolution. In its leadership mind, to preserve apostolic succession, it had to seek consecration through the Church of Scotland (Anglican) because The Church of England wouldn't do it because they were still po'ed about losing the American colonies.

Not defending the modern TEC at all or the TCoE. It was interesting last week how TCoE's House of Bishops stated they should not affirm homosexual unions within the church, even though the U.K. passed homosexual marriage last year - and TCoE is a state church. More fireworks to come ...
