Stovall hoping citizen statesman appeal will land Senate seat
Deer Park Broadcaster ^ | 2/18/14 | VANESA BRASHIER

Just weeks before the March 4 Republican Primary, Dwayne Stovall is spending his days just as he has the last several months — driving across the state and appearing before large and small groups of Texans, hoping to gain their votes in his race for U.S. Senate.

If he is fatigued, he’s not showing it. In fact, Stovall appears to be energized by his grassroots campaign that boasts 1,100 volunteers, and counting.

Stovall, a resident of Tarkington in Liberty County, is vying for the U.S. Senate seat of veteran politician John Cornyn.

Though he may be considered a long shot by some, Stovall appears to be gaining ground. In recent weeks, he has won his ninth straw poll, has been endorsed by dozens of Tea Party groups and has been recognized by national media, though in some cases the mention is unflattering.

“Greta Van Susteren [of Fox News] called me a jerk on Friday for making a reference to [Minority Leader] Mitch McConnell as a Beltway Turtle,” said Stovall, referring to a video ad that posted side-by-side photos of McConnell and a Looney Tunes character, Cecil Turtle.

In the 30-second ad, Stovall says, “As a senator from Texas, you vote for Texas. You don’t stab her in the back by voting for cloture on Obamacare. You don’t enslave its children with unconstitutional laws and overwhelming debt and you certainly don’t do this to please some guy that looks and fights like a turtle.”

His dog Major is then shown saying, with a voice-over, “I like turtle soup.”

Stovall says he is amazed by the reaction the advertisement has received.

Keep Cornyn under 50%.

The goal is to keep Cornyn under 50, but I’m getting a little hesitant about Stockman, who would likely win the chance to face Cornyn in a runoff by default as his name is likely to attract more support from general anti-Cornyn voters. I know Texas is not as competitive for Democrats as Indiana was, and an Akin-esque implosion is unlikely, but Stockman is known for bombastic bomb throwing, and has no statewide campaign at all. I really really hope we don’t shoot ourselves in the foot with this one.

Who are the Democrats running?

The Democrats won't win this seat, no matter what.

IMHO, the recent following two quotes by Conservative Commentator Eric Erickson highlight why Conservative TEXANS should make their votes count in this Primary Election:

1.) “ - - - As all of us know, we may not live in Texas, but Texas affects us and we all probably secretly or not so secretly want to live there. - - - “

2. ) “ - - - - It’s imperative that Texas have strong conservative leadership – because as Texas goes, so goes America. - - - “

I kinda liked Stockman—but the more I hear, I’m not so sure about him.

Is there a truly conservative or tea party candidate among the lot of them?

Stovall has the grassroots support of Texas. He wins the straw polls, but his name ID is terrible. Nobody knows who he is. That’s why I can only really see Stockman forcing the runoff. Unfortunately, while he has the conservative chops on most things, he is no Ted Cruz as a political operator. If Stockman wins it will not be through his own talent or hard work (the man has done virtually no campaigning). It will be us dragging him over the finish line. Happy to help though, as long as he pledges loyalty to our caucus of course.

Nobody knew who Cruz was either, until the race entered the run-off. There were a bunch of challengers to Dewhurst in that race, too.

Feel exactly as you do.

What bothers me is I see no visible support from Cruz for Stovall. I mean, even an accidental photo of them in line buying slurpees in a Houston 7-11 would send me hurtling into Stovall’s arms.

Dwayne Stovall is exactly the kind of representation the Founders had in mind.

If we can find and elec 534 more just like him, we might just restore this great republic.

I agree that Cruz wasn’t a household name but he did have some recognition among the
powers that be based upon his experiences begining with GW Bush in the 2000 election.
That may have helped him somewhat in getting their support.

Support in the form of endorsements and money didn't come until the run-off election.

Saw Stovall speak last night at a debate at UT Arlington. He’s the real deal. I liked Reasor’s points, too, but Dwayne would be the best match with Cruz. Stovall is well versed in the Constitution. A true citizen statesman. Cornyn sent a girl to represent him. Stockman camp was MIA.

But that helped him defeat an incumbent.

This is going to be a tough one…..we need to get rid of Corynan, of course, but we have at least 2 candidates that will be diluting each other’s votes, and people here like both of them.

I guess that’s what primaries are for.

UH OH!

Unless he had a mighty good reason for missing that debate, Stockman just went down in my opinion……..

Wikipedia pulled the article on Stovall just a few hours after it was posted on Feb. 16; they claim he is not-notable. Stockman has an article, as all legislators are eligible, including all state representatives.

They aren't diluting each other's votes, they are taking votes away from Cornyn.
