China has long trained for an amphibious invasion of Taiwan during military exercises but has expanded its training to include a similar attack on Japanese holdings in the East China Sea, according the chief of intelligence of the U.S. Pacific Fleet (PACFLEET).
As part of China’s Mission Action 2013 exercise — a massive exercise between the all branches of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) — the military trained for taking the Senkaku Islands, said Capt. James Fannell, deputy chief of staff intelligence and information operations for PACFLEET.
“We witnessed the massive amphibious and cross military region enterprise — Mission Action 2013,” Fannell said at the West 2014 conference on Feb. 13 in San Diego, Calif. “[We] concluded that the PLA has been given the new task to be able to conduct a short sharp war to destroy Japanese forces in the East China Sea following with what can only be expected a seizure of the Senkakus or even a southern Ryukyu [islands] — as some of their academics say.”
In the last year, China has increased the military activity has additionally increased provocative military actions in the South China Sea around the so-called Nine Dash Line — China’s expansive claim into the region in conflict with several other international claims. . .

Viet Nam, India, Japan, even Mongolia is afraid the chi-coms will try to make their country the next Nepal.

While adult males here in the U.S. are controlled by maintaining them in the mindset of boys (Sports!!!!), in Japan, they are infantilized.

My own thought about this sort of conflict.
For China’s sake it would need to be Short and Victorious. Inside China are multiple revolutions just waiting for the right moment to be let loose.
For the Japanese, a war might be what is needed to kick-start their economy again and re-ignite the men and women to start reproducing again.
Materiel wise, China has a lot now to work with, They also have a HUGE frontier and border to defend. Can they do that and spare enough to fight Japan with?
For their Neighbors including itty-bitty Taiwan, actions like this may result in a new defensive organization specifically tasked to rein in Chinese military ambitions.
And so on and so forth... Bottom line if there is going to be a ‘hot war’ it needs to be done and over within a month or there will be lots of consequences, economic, military and political.

When you hear "short sharp" about a potential conflict between two major powers you should be afraid.

I disagree—The Japanese mind set isn’t gone. Any war will see them come together like fingers into a fist! The war will not be short and it will be fearce. China may well be facing a great deal of hurt—as Japanese subs take out China’s trade and cut off her oil. Such a war will hit us to—imagine Wal-mart with nothing from China or Japan? Imagine—to pay for the War China drops all of our bonds—Debt celling be dammed—what if no one will loan us the gold Obama needs? I read that the Japanese could make a Nuke bomb in a weekend! (a H-Bomb might take a month) and they are working on one now. These things can spin out of control fast—Lets hope their are rational heads in China to keep this from getting out of control.

I wish that were true...but for example...the CEO of IBM, Ginni Rometty, is in China right now kissing the a$$es of the ChiCom leadership to start buying IBM hardware again. The ChiComs stopped buying IBM hardware after the Snowden revelations about NSA spying capabilities embedded in IT hardware.
That 1.2B population pool of “consumers” is just too great a marketing “target” for most corporations these days.
I lived in Japan for a while many years ago; yes, they still have the Samurai Spirit.
Despite their vast armies and huge arsenals, the Chinese are still bass-akwards; there is a sound basis for the phrase “Chinese Fire Drill.”
The Japanese, meanwhile, are sharp as a tack, and venomous, unrelenting enemies.
The North Koreans, if they got dragged into it, would probably stop at Seoul. I suspect, although I couldn’t prove it, that the North Korean rank and file would surrender pretty quickly once they arrived in the southern region of abundant kimchi and barbecue beef. Maybe significant numbers of officers, too.
Having worked with the Japanese Defense forces I’ll have to disagree. Their tech is as good as ours, their committment beyond reproach.
Yes they are smaller, but I believe that others in the region would not just sit back and China would end up operating on multiple fronts in a very short time.
Little doubt Japan could have detterent in 2 weeks of the desire - they have had delivery systems for decades.
If nothing else it would be an initial China surge followed by a very long period of back and forth.
China is so stupid using the stick instead of the carrot. It is alienating all it’s neighbors one by one. Of course the US having a puss in chief who ignores everything his fellow travelers in Peking are up too helps.
If I were China I would take care in dealing with the Japanese. They are provoking a fight they don’t have too and the result will be a rearmed Japan and possibly a nuclear armed Japan. Look for South Korea to start hunting for nukes especially if they think the US will fall to the wayside in the Pacific. I would also look for Vietnam to reach out to India, Japan and even the US for defense related alliances down the road.

Today, the samurai spirit can still be found in Japan. I know , after having lived here for 28 years , that the people of Japan take pride in this fact and will ensure that the tradition survives into the future.

The Japanese are indeed sharp as a .......Gunma sword, and once fired as enemies will be unrelenting to the last man or woman.Already any Chinese person present in any local neighborhood of Japan is cause for deep suspicion and distrust.And if I would be called to fight, there would be no greater honor than to stand with the Japanese, a fact lost on the prick who infests the White Hut, who has disempowerd our nation, and weakened it horribly abroad. We do not have one battle ready division in our Armed Forces, they are worn out and ill equipped from Afghanistan and the presidential "cuts", and I see that today Obama is warning the Ukraine not to "cross the line" in dealing with Kiev demonstrations, what an idiot Obama is, he has no ready military and the Russians know it, laughing at our surrender monkey president.The whole world laughs at Obama and our allies shudder at our weakness.
