If I were a teacher I would give them a -1

or the square root of -1, they can have an imaginary grade if the people in charge are so disconnected from reality...

I think the going rate is 10 points for putting your name on the paper and turning it in.

If you get a perfect score on one assignment and a 0 on the second one your average is 50% or an F. Interestingly, if you average grades on a 4.0 scale (A=4, B=3...) instead of percentages, taking the average of the A paper and the F paper will give you a C.

Think I’d be giving out negative grades.

You get 200 on each section of the SAT just for having a pulse, so that's 600 of 2400 or a good, solid F--.

I really made out in HS by moving 3x, between numerical to grade to numerical GPA calculations.

Something similar is going to happen in my district and all across the state of Texas. Starting next year, teachers will be forbidden from taking off points for late work. I asked my dept. chair if that meant I could pay my school property taxes late without a penalty...

On behalf of children who get 0s on assignments, although the child may deserve the grade, the child may also be struggling with difficult personal relationships.

Yes, I can believe it. I'm a teacher. I've been asked to leave a grade blank in the online system rather than record a 0 because the blank won't be averaged in. I pointed out that that would defeat the purpose of grading. (She was unaware that until you entered a single grade, the average is 100.)

Frankly, for most things, I won't put in anything below a 40 if they put any effort into at all, for the simple reason that those who are lost on this one topic won't get killed by it (a zero will really kill an average for an otherwise B or C student), and those who generally fail everything will still fail.

But I'll give 0 if it isn't handed in or if they put their name on the paper and figure that that's enough for some credit (and some actually do think that). Because I'm not the type to simple enter a "0" for any old PITA who just deserves to fail -- especially because those guys can fail all on their own.

I hate the game. I hate the system. But it's the one I have to work with, and it will all fall back on me in the end.

OH GAWD!

Kids throughout history have gone through “difficult relationships” at one time or another.

Life is tough...They better get used to it.

At our school, we have a no zero policy, but it doesn’t work like that.

Any kids with zeros must stay in class and work during recess time until they get their work caught up. They are marked as zeros until the kids get assigments in, and we are allowed to deduct points for late work.

If, at the end of the marking period, there are still missing assignments and no good reason exists for the zeros (medical or family hardship), then they are allowed to stand as zeros, and if the kid fails, so be it.

Technically this is a “no zero” policy, but the added accountability and consequences are good, in my opinion. The number of kids turning work in on time has gone up since we started doing this.

You wouldn’t want to hurt their precious “self-esteem” would you? You are obviously mean-spirited. Surely, this is “for the children”.
