George P Bush's March To Office Hits Endorsement Snag
KEYE Austin ^ | 2/19/14 | KEYE Austin

George P. Bush's march to assume the mantle of his politically storied family hit a small snag in Austin when the largest daily in Texas' capital city endorsed his little-known opponent, David Watts.

The Austin American-Statesman cited a weak field in the race for the Republican nomination for Texas land commissioner before it anointed the East Texas its preferred candidate over the son of a governor, nephew of a president, and grandson of another president.

The unconventional pick might be good for stirring up discussion or even web traffic, but the Watts campaign shouldn't bank on it being the game changing moment in a badly unbalanced race.

Beyond the superficial name recognition, George P. Bush has any number of seemingly insurmountable advantages

He’s a nice enough guy, seemingly so, at least, but I refuse to vote him into office, just because I know he’s been groomed for this. If he’s another Rove lackey, I’ll vote opposite him as much as I can.

Same here, but he’s Jeb’s son, which is the biggest mark against him in my book. Jeb is a Hillary lover-—the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. He’s probably for amnesty too.

He’s for immigration reform but worried the Conservative base is not there.

Is there anything he can screw up in the land office like hamstringing Border Patrol?

It is ironic that a Kentucky Chamber of Commerce supporter and a Miami banker arrived in Texas to tell them what to do.

Well, there's the counterculture rag, the Austin Chronicle, and the student rag, The Daily Texan. Probably about half a dozen Spanish publications read by a total of 31 people altogether.

If you throw the regular commercial rag, the Austin American-Statesman, into that fetid mix, you have a city served by exactly ZERO real newspapers (i.e., newspapers that are run by people whose ideas don't suck out loud.)

The Land Commissioner position actually is a powerful role in a state that has a lot of oil and gas industry. He is seeking that role to become Lt Gov, then Gov, and then President.

Personally, he doesn’t deserve it, just because he is a Bush.

Oh...and a description of what that role entails:

Jeb is an amnesty advocate, which is why I voted against JR.

There’s a weekly there. Most of it’s ads were “women seeking women” type. I’m sure the internet killed that.

But the Austin American Statesman is an endorsement you don’t want.
