Not sure about his slant, but I always liked him.

Fluent in Russian, German and French

The people the MSM hires today can barely speak English.

Pretty much takes care of the old school TV journalists like Tim Russert
and David Brinkley (Clinton- "He's a bore, and he will always be a bore")

I always enjoyed his reporting. He was quite sophisticated and highly educated, but he never came across as superior to his viewers. In fact, it often seemed like he was sharing a sly joke or insight with us. Edwin Newman was much the same. They make the current crop of “journalists” look like preening imbeciles.

He was old school meaning not a liberal out slanting the news.

He was a good one. And as a poster said earlier, I never knew what his political slant was, just that he conveyed the info clearly and with intelligence and some wit.

Fluent in Russian, German and French...

Which I would venture gives him three more languages than about 99% of the current working MSM. At least these TV journos were smart in the old days. Now....

I miss the ones that were capable and witty such as Mr. Utley. David Brinkley, Harry Reasoner and Charles Kuralt may have been somewhat liberal but they didn’t beat you over the head with it. Brit Hume is one of the few from the latter half of that generation who are still around.
