Belated Medal of Honor for 24 Soldiers Overlooked Due to Race
ABC News ^ | Friday, February 21, 2014 | Luis Martinez

Twenty-four Army soldiers who fought in World War II, Korea and Vietnam will receive the Medal of Honor next month, correcting oversights that prevented many of them from receiving the nation’s highest award for valor because of their Hispanic, Jewish and African-American backgrounds, White House officials said today.

The awarding of 24 Medals of Honor — most of them posthumously — will be the largest number to be awarded at one time since World War II.

The process began in 2002 when Congress mandated that the military services review the cases of hundreds of Hispanic and Jewish service members who fought during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War and received the Distinguished Service Cross instead of the Medal of Honor for their heroism. The Distinguished Service Cross is the nation’s second-highest award for valor.

The 12-year review of cases ultimately identified 18 Army soldiers whose cases merited being upgraded to the Medal of Honor, officials said.

During the course of the review it was determined that six soldiers not of Hispanic or Jewish backgrounds should also have their Distinguished Service Crosses upgraded to the Medal of Honor.

The Medals of Honor will be awarded on March 18 in a White House ceremony that will be attended by the three living recipients — all Vietnam veterans — as well as the families of the 21 others who are receiving the award posthumously. Of the 24 recipients, seven served in World War II, eight in the Korean War and nine in the Vietnam War.

The majority of the new Medal of Honor recipients are of Hispanic descent, but the extensive review of cases began with an effort review the case of PFC Leonard Kravitz, a Jewish-American soldier who died in the Korean War.

MOH affirmative action?

Gosh, next thing ya know they’ll be busting Asian and white kids for tiny infractions, the better to even out the stats, right...?

Oh, wait.

This reeks of propaganda Ted to coincide with the divide and conquer tactics of the regime

And Hillary’s cultural crusade should be suspected in all things now, including in the FCC deal

Blacks and Hidpanics do very well in the military and tgey are welcome in every unit. This headline is embarrassing and unnecessary to them. Whom does it serve

It would be fair to review ALL DSC recipients, not just the special races, but that would result in too many white men receiving upgrades to the CMH.

I dunno, Kris ... there may well have been prejudice against coloreds in WW2, but I don't remember any Jew hating or Spic hating at the time.

I think this is a ploy to soften the military pay/pension blow ... maybe just trying to appear military friendly

Interesting. This fellow was a late recipient.

He certainly was an awesome Jew. His story is kind of sad - his superior officer really did hate Jews and it was his buddies that finally went to the top.

Sorry - not officer.

“...For this and other acts of bravery, Rubin was recommended four times for the Medal of Honor by two of his commanding officers. Both of these officers were killed in action shortly afterwards, but not before ordering Rubin’s sergeant to begin the necessary paperwork recommending Rubin for the Medal of Honor. Some of Rubin’s fellow GIs were present and witnessed when the order was issued to the sergeant, and all are convinced that the sergeant deliberately ignored the orders. “I really believe, in my heart, that [the sergeant] would have jeopardized his own safety rather than assist in any way whatsoever in the awarding of the Medal of Honor to a person of Jewish descent”, wrote Corporal Harold Speakman in a notarized affidavit.[2]”

Shades of the 1890’s when corrupt politicians handed out MOH’s for farting in the direction of the Confederates during the Civil War. Many of them had to be revoked later because they didn't even come close to the standard set for the MOH.

A lot of guys were put in for the MoH who didn’t get it for a variety of reasons, sometimes valid, sometimes petty. I’m glad to see past wrongs righted, but this seems, how should I say it...convenient? I wonder how after all these years they could tell.

You are correct sir. It would be racist to have too many white men getting top honors, because we know white men are totally EEEEEEVVVVVVVIIIIIIIIILLLLLL RACISTS. We know evil white men lay awake nights and think of ways to do in minorities. We know white men have this horrible war on women, because we like to see babies born. We all know white men are the most horrible monsters that have ever existed in the entire universe, and God obviously made a mistake when she crested these awful, disgusting cretins. Did I leave anything out and do I really need a sarcasm off tag?

Well, I'm not saying God is male or female but I assure you HE is not just a female. That's an argument for another thread, just say'in.

My sentiments too...and why is it so hard to give the CMH to DESERVING combatants? After all, they gave on to former Nebraska Governor & Senator Bob Kerrey for taking his charges ashore, making a wrong turn into a mine field, and getting his foot blown off...what a klutz...

(And btw, when Kerrey was Gov of Neb ‘Terms of Endearment’ was shot in Lincoln, and it was said that Debra Winger ‘swept him off his foot’)

See 17. I don’t know how the misspelling got past my eagle eyes. I guess I was too busy watching this idiot actress on TV saying we don’t need the pipeline.
