First ‘smart’ pistol hits shelves in California.

The first so-called “smart gun” has hit the shelves at U.S. retail outlets, including one of the biggest firearms stores in California, according to the Washington Post.

The Smart System iP1, a .22-caliber pistol made by the German gun-maker Armatix GmbH, can only function with an accompanying wristwatch, which is sold separately.

When the RFID-equipped watch is activated by a PIN number and placed near the gun — like when a shooter grips the handle — it sends a signal to unlock the gun and a light on the back of the weapon turns green, according to the report. Otherwise, the firearm stays locked and the light on the back remains red, it stated.

The pistol sells for $1,399 and the watch retails for another $399 — more than double the cost of .40-caliber Glock handgun, according to the article.

The company is betting that demand for the technology will increase as consumers seek guns modified for safety.

My “dumb” pistol (it only does what I tell it to) has never caused any problems, so I guess I’ll stay with it. ;)

No thanks. Too many points of failure. When you need your weapon to function, failure is not an option.

First ‘smart’ pistol hits shelves in California.

And for the most part I imagine it will stay on the shelves, other than having a couple of liberals buy them to try and make a pointless point.

They'll get the owner killed. when they fail to work.
Leave them on the shelf at the store.

The only way someone would be dumb enough to buy one of these is if they were mandated by law......and therefore the only choice for a new gun purchase.

How is government gonna get the millions of hand guns already out there? If they are grandfathered in, then my gun collection is gonna quintuple in value.......at the very least.

If they are required to be turned in.....well.....good luck with that! Lol.

At $1,800 for a pistol, I'd say that is a very poor bet.

As many believe they are the only ones that should have access to lethal force Law Enforcement should be the first to carry this new technology.

We do want those who protect us to have safe pistols right?

Which department/agency will be the first to step up?

I have absolutely no problem offering this technology to those who want it and are willing to pay for it.

What I absolutely and fervently object to is mandating this technolgy on new guns, which is the direction Kalifornia is going.

Speaking of Kalifornia, all newly introduced handguns in that state must comply with the new Microstamping law. Does this firearm have Microstamping integrated into its firing pin and chamber?

Hope it does not rely on Microsoft Technology or the phase “blue screen of death” will take on a whole new meaning

James Bond had a watch that shot a bullet. I want one of them. Who needs a gun that tells time?

Never is there any mention of the government adopting these devices.

Anything running on a battery is a stupid idea, but something has to power the gps signal.

This should be an easy one for hackers.

The gun might be smart but anyone that has one for more than plinking is stupid.
