Finland wins bronze over U.S. in men's hockey

It was over in a flash. A Finnish Flash. For Team USA, however, it was more like a flash finish.

Team Finland scored two goals in 11 seconds early in the second period to snap a 0-0 tie en route to a 5-0 victory in the bronze medal game Saturday.

Veteran Teemu Selanne, playing in his 35th Olympic hockey game, scored two goals including the game-winner to lead Finland. It was a wonderful conclusion to what has been a splendid Olympic hockey career for a classy gentleman.

Selanne scored on a nifty backhand shot at 1:27 of the second period and then off the ensuing faceoff, the Finns charged into the American zone with Jussi Jokinen, notching his second goal of the Olympic tournament. That was the game.

The United States generated very few quality scoring chances in the game as the Finns appeared to have a tad more interest in the outcome of the game.

The Finns added three third-period goals to ensure the victory.

It sure did. That was just one reason why the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” probably wasn’t as big an upset as it was made out to be at the time.

Makes you wonder about just how good Finland could have been if they were totally healthy. All four of the centers they originally selected for their roster ended up missing most or all of these Olympics with injuries, including Mikko Koivu and Valtteri Filppula.

I’d like to see YOU play Canada and Finland back-to-back, within 24 hrs.

Didn't Finland play Sweden, the NUMBER ONE SEED, and the USA back to back, within 24 hours?

Talk about stupid opinions, mook.

Thanks, and it’s not even WFTD!

I said I wasn’t going to second-guess Bylsma about the goaltender choice, and it’s not – you went with who got you there, and again, you can’t win without goal support (unless you pitch a double shutout). However, it’s probably going to solidify the opinion of some that this coach can’t get a team over the hump despite immense talent…

Total waste of time that’s why I didn;t even bother to watch it. They choked like the USA girls in the last 2 minutes. Bring back the grads from the Junior Hockey championships, and you’ll witness true hockey at it’s core. A LOT of Americans don’t even know it exists but runs from Christmas to New Years..

Weren’t most of the goals scored on power plays too? That’s not Quick’s fault if he’s not getting enough support and a couple of goals on our side would have helped. Do we not have good American coaches?

Seeing as how two Dallas Stars: Benn and Lehtonen helped beat the US, I think it bodes well for them....They just climbed to 8th in the Western Conference, we’ll see if they can move up, they seem to be a good young team finally getting over the hump, now if they can just get more consistency.

Did Lehtonen even play today? I thought Tuukka Rask was in net for Finland.

Gotta love all these Finnish names with double letters in them. Olli Maatta should have a cult following by now. LOL.

Unfortunately for hockey team USA, welcome to my world. This team was constructed and coached to this result. People tend to blame individual players for results like this but I definitely think the problem this time lay with coaching and management. Hopefully they learn from this for next time.

With the fast-track nature of this kind of tournament and most of the teams having such a high level of professional talent, you have to wonder how much the coaches and their motivation really played in the outcomes. I’d think that the GM’s and things done at the organizational level as far as player selection, etc. had more of an impact.

I wasn’t able to watch much of the Hockey competition live because of work requirements during the day, but based on the results alone it seemed that Ted Nolan did a creditable job with Latvia and got the most out of that squad. ( / homer OFF ;)

Olympic hockey has become nothing but an expanded version of the NHL All Star game. The guys are picked, they fly to the olympics then they play......

Under the current rules, there will never again be a game such as the 1980 U.S. amateurs vs. the Russians............

It's a joke.........

You can’t just put a team of all-stars together in two weeks and expect them to gel.

Canada, Sweden and Finland didn't seem to have a problem with that.

No excuses. The US team gave a good effort yesterday against a very talented Canadian team. That game could have gone either way. Today, against another talented team from Finland, the US just sucked.
