I listened to it for a couple of minutes because I wasn’t able to get the TV channel changed quickly. He kept bemoaning the fact that no one was asking him about playing football. Surely he had to expect that most of the questions would be about his gayness.
He was on the verge of having his career end in obscurity. The football player was dropping fast in the draft, and might have ended up a low round pick or undrafted. Announce you’re gay and it is instant attention and a chance to reverse things. If their teams do worse, do they dare cut either player?
The team could be called the San Francisco Gays...and they could play in a newly-named Magic Johnson arena. The team's main offensive maneuvers would be full-court presses and consumate skill with lay-ups.
Any additional comments on this idea would be sexist, racist or subject to your dog being shot.

“And Jason Collins takes it to the rim once again!”
That’s cool. We know Kobe Bryant likes anal sex so he won’t have to feel so alone.
One mainstream media type eagerly reported on the radio today that Collins was about to sign with the New Jersey Nets.
It's a standard NBA practice. Teams that find themselves shorthanded due to injury can sign players to a 10-day contract so they can have a full roster. When the ten days expire, the club can sign the player to another one (up to three, I think) without having to sign them to a season-long contract and be on the hook for a year's salary.
Good for you.
We can hope that millions of other Nets as well as NBA fans will do the same.
So what?
So he will get a call from zipperhead as being heroes, courages, an inspiration to us all but no phone calls to the families of real heroes that were murdered in Benghazi by the despicable humans who rule
That sucks!
Would an openly straight male ballet dancer be considered news?
I hear you, but my question is ... what will tip kids off that he’s gay, unless a big deal is made of it at gametime. Therein lies my point...no deal should be made about what he does in his private life.
They have the WNBA. A load of lesbians play for them. The league only survive because of the NBA.
