A proposal to lay an undersea cable between Portugal and Brazil to circumvent US snooping has been praised by Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.
Rousseff on Monday (25 February) in Brussels at the annual EU-Brazil summit told reporters that privacy, human rights, and the sovereignty of nations must be respected.
“The internet is one of the best things man has ever invented. So we agreed for the need to guarantee … the neutrality of the network, a democratic area where we can protect freedom of expression,” she said.
Brazilian state-owned telecom provider Telebra is reported to have cut a deal last month with Spain's IslaLink’s Submarine Cables to lay the €134 million cable.
The plan is to reroute Brazil’s internet traffic, which currently passes through a network access point in Florida, away from the US altogether. …

Both are former colonial powers and former colonies. Brazil once colonized Portugal, believe it or not.
And note someone will get a 134 million Euro contract.
That won’t stop anything. It just give the government of Brazil more power over what it’s people connect too.
We did a lot of snooping on the Soviets’ undersea cables that made for some great submarine exploits stories. I think it would probably beasier now and the snooping probably would originate at the terminals rather than the cable proper.Somewhere in the system there are computers that have connections to people or to other computers. They will be hacked.
Agreed. It’s a move by one nation to influence another and wouldn’t stop any “snooping.”
All it’d take is one guy to set up some commands on various routers in Brazil, and everything going back and forth to Europe...would be copied and sent through some pattern to the NSA nest anyway. It’s wasted money if you ask me....but Brazil is free to spend as it feels like.

If you accept Dinesh D’Souza’s premise then this is the type of thing Obama wants. For nations to achieve parity with the United States similiar to our position in the world 120 years ago. Therefore he’s more than happy to see other nations bypass U.S. telecom infrastructure.

Hardly a mention of the NSA for the last sixty years. The once prestigious intelligence agency has become the “enemy” to many under this obscene administration. That’s #’d up.
Gratuitous remark, sounds like a swipe at US monkeyshines which will get past our MSM. Don’t seem the US has any financial stake in the laying of this cable. Although her last name sounds Russian she might be Ukrainan which would be the 2nd time the Brazilians elected someone from that immigrant group. Or from that slavic region in Europe.
No problem, I imagine a tap on the line ala the one done by the Navy to the old USSR sub sea cable.
