'Slow-poke’ bill aims to stop left lane lingerers
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | Aaron Gould Sheinin

Those who lollygag in the left lane of highways and interstates could be ticketed under legislation approved in the state House on Wednesday. House Bill 459, by Rep. Bill Hitchens, R-Rincon, was approved 162-9.

The bill makes it a misdemeanor for any driver on a divided highway who does not move to the right when a car going faster approaches from behind.

I have been driving divided highways for fifty years and all that time there have been signs saying "Slower traffic keep right." It amazes me that there are people who do not understand that simple instruction. But there are, and they apparently need more than a sign to induce considerate and safe behavior.

Highway driving is not a game as some juveniles here like to think. If voluntary orderliness won't work, then ticketing may. If you are one who likes to camp in the left lane, you brought this on your self.

Right ... when the highway is not full I’ll yield the left lane when I’m finished passing, and expect others to extend the same courtesy to me. I DON’T engage in tailgating, headlight-flashing, lane-weaving, and other displays of aggressive idiocy.

In all cases, calmness and patience are requirements. If other drivers’ bad behavior of whatever sort makes you angry, then you have personal problems than you had best deal with. You can’t control the idiots; you can control yourself.

Italians have a rep in europe, well deserved in my experience. Lanes mean next to nothing to them. Google “worse drivers in europe”.

Sane and intelligent people do not engage in the behavior you describe. Sane and intelligent people do not obstruct traffic, sane and intelligent people do not attempt to drive faster than conditions (including crowding) allow, sane and intelligent people do not engage in blatant displays of aggression.

Hope it works for you guys.

Here, in Colorado, it's been the law for several years. There are signs every mile: "Keep Right Except to Pass".

It hasn't worked.

The clueless idiots still camp out in the left lane.

Actually when it comes down to it the truth is that without a massive re-education effort, or maybe even with one, Americans might just be incapable of making the best use of the road.

It doesn’t matter what speed. It’s not enforced much if at all. Basically, if you are in the left lane and don’t move to the right to let another car pass you can be pulled over and ticketed.

We also have some areas where it’s posted “Trucks Use Right Two Lanes” but that’s never enforced either.

One time AlGore’s son got pulled over for doing 110 (or thereabouts) in his Prius here in Southern California.

What if you are in the left lane, driving the speed limit, and some jerk comes along doing 10-15 MPH over the speed limit. Do you still have to pull over?

Yes. Get your butt out of the way. Who appointed you the traffic moderator?

If you are in the left lane, and you are not actively passing someone at the time, YOU are breaking the law.

It’s always amusing to watch law-breakers demand that other folks stop breaking the law.

This thread has provided a whole lot of (unintentional) humor.

If I'm driving the speed limit in the left lane, and you want to drive 15 MPH over the speed limit, you are welcome to drive around me.

It's illegal to pass on the right, and in a growing number of places it's illegal (and bad driving etiquette EVERYWHERE) to hang out in the left lane without actively passing.

Obey the law and get over to the right.

To: Kennesaw; Revolting cat!

Finally speeders can demand that other drivers be ticketed for only driving the “limit”.

There’s a difference between arbitrary speed limits and no passing zones (which provide useful information to enable drivers to make safe decisions).

But you knew that.

Anyone who has a healthy regard for highway speed limits is a suspect jackboot-licker.

So....I’m going the speed limit...or a bit over..and someone going way faster zips up my 6...Am I supposed to change lanes?

If you aren't already in the rightmost lane, yes.

Bad law. It invites excessive speeding which will result in more accidents and massive traffic jams.

WTH is “excessive speeding”? (I presume it means that you speed, but anyone who goes faster still must be a maniac).

Incidentally, this law applies in many states, which have demonstrated that your alarm is unjustified.

Actually, all it takes is ENFORCEMENT. When the speed cops ignore the arbitrary speed numbers and start ticketing for safety violations (like left lane hogs) then behavior will change. But until the unionized highway robbers change what they do, drivers won’t change what they do.

Or when you’re doing the speed limit and going faster than the traffic in the right lane, but the idiot behind you wants to do 30 miles over the speed limit.

Don’t like the misdemeanor part. Why not make it a civil infraction?
