Ex-IRS official Lerner's attorney says no Hill testimony without immunity or court order

The attorney for Lois Lerner, a central figure in the IRS scandal, signaled Wednesday that his client will not comply with a request to testify on Capitol Hill next week.

Attorney William Taylor said Lerner, who resigned last year as the agency’s tax-exempt organizations chief, will return and testify only if compelled by a federal court or if given immunity for her testimony.

Taylor stated his position in a letter to Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. He was responding to a letter Tuesday from Issa saying, in part, that Lerner’s testimony remains “critical to the committee’s investigation.”

The committee continues to investigate the IRS' targeting of Tea Party groups and other conservative organizations trying to get tax-exempt status.

Despite Taylor's letter, staffers with the committee told Fox News they still expect Lerner to show up on March 5. Unclear is whether she would answer any questions.

You are correct. The GOP wholeheartedly backs the IRS's shut down of the Tea Party and their failing to approve their tax-exempt status requests, thereby lessening the Tea Parties ability to garner donations.

'GOP backs IRS's shut down of Tea Party' IS the dirty secret in DC.

The poster girl of the culture of Washington D.C. and all it stands for: lies, corruption, criminality and moral collapse.

Those soulless eyes are like staring at the monster in the abyss.

The GOP is too spooked by “war on women” propaganda to compel Lois Lerner to testify. The time to force her testimony was when she was a Federal employee. This becomes more difficult now that she is retired

"An admission by her attorney that his client knows things that would put her in prison. It can’t be interpreted any other way."

If she ever agrees to testify with immunity, she'd probably be looking over her shoulder the rest of her life for fear of getting Breitbarted, Browned, Fostered or Fuddied.

If they give her immunity, she will tell them nothing and the committee will be left with indignant outrage and there isn’t a damn thing they will be able to do about it.

There has been a precedence that already been set back in the Reagan years.

Remember?

Court order? They’ll be back to square one with the Fifth Amendment and still not get answers.

[It appears she is having her way with this hapless committee. I doubt they’ll ever extract anything useful from her.]

Extracting actionable testimony is not nearly as important as political theater—hours of exposure on C-SPAN, delivering bombastic mini-speeches to witnesses instead of questions, nightly news sound bites, and meat for fund-raising emails.

Ah, but under oath if she lies she may be prosecuted. So if she takes a 'deal' and then lies- she goes to jail.

If she is subpoenaed and lies- she goes to jail.

Go to jail. Go directly to jail. Do not collect $200.

Unbelievable. This is a U.S. Government employee, subject to Congressional oversight. SUSPEND her pension ... now!

Judith Miller went to jail for contempt of a Grand Jury subpoena. And this is a much more egregious episode!

“Not even mass corruption -- not even a smidgen of corruption.”

Obama

Yeah, that's why Lerner pleaded the Fifth and is demanding immunity.

Is this kind of like: " I did not have sex with that woman..." or, "If you like your health care coverage you can keep it."?

I agree with some of the other posts here.

And to add I'd like to contribute one from the movie Office Space.

Michael Bolton: We get caught laundering money, we're not going to white-collar resort prison. No, no, no. We're going to federal POUND ME IN THE ASS prison.

That's where she needs to be sentenced to.

FIND OUT WHAT SHE KNOWS FIRST!

If they offer her immunity and she says “I did it all myself” then they got nothing.

Why does she need immunity if, as she said herself, she did nothing wrong?
