That picture of the Detective Sergeant standing in front of some the recovered cars reminds me of Nazi Germany - that uniform is ridiculous.

The uniform was designed to have a military look to it. The New Jersey State Police were founded in the 1920s by Norman Schwarzkopf Sr. (the father of the U.S. general of Gulf War fame) to serve as a police force in the rural areas of New Jersey that had no local police. The function they served at the time was similar to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and that was probably one of the factors in the look of the uniform.

When questioned, none of the suspects could name the president or king of West Africa.

Interesting observation. I remember reading year ago stories about the formation of the USAF. One related to their uniforms and how many in the military admired the Luftwaffe uniforms and wanted to incorporate some of the features in the new USAF uniform. I think the officers cap made the cut, but not sure.
However looking at some of the uniforms of various State POlice, I suspect there were others that admired that uniform.
Of course, here in Arizona DPS (our Hwy Patrol) and many of the Sheriff's departments dress in a type of combat fatigues.
Intimidate and Dominate.

Besides the garish yellow patches and leather belts and shoulder belt, the hat is most certainly reminiscent of a Nazi Officer’s Hat. The front height exaggerated.

My recollection of AF garrison caps in the 60s and 70s was not so pronounced. In fact, mine had a round foam insert along with a spring metal band that kept the whole thing circular and tight, not at all like this one. You might be recalling the bomber pilot caps that were badly deformed because of headphones.

That young man had to die in order to get the police to break up this ring.

Sure they knew car thefts were occurring, but lacked the motivation to pursue it until there's a body count.

Threatening the economy in Short Hills, you get some action.

The Air Force had the bus drivers hat that made you look like a skinny Ralph Kramden and the cunt cap that had a split down the middle. Both looked ridiculous IMO! Can I say Cunt Cap?
