By analogy: If you drive your car just one hour a year, you'll still have to pay for a whole year's worth of registration fees, insurance, etc. Thus, the more you drive it, the lower the relative importance of those fixed costs.

Airplanes require a LOT of regular maintenance.
Because of the light weight, many components are designed with a finite life and a replacement cycle is mandated thru the life of the airframe and engines.
So I think this is what contributes to the cost when the usage is high.
Time to get rid of AF1 and replace it with a 737.

I finished my 4 year term in the USAF SAC in May 1976. I remember my friends that reenlisted driving me crazy over the crap they had to go through under Carter. They all wanted a career in the USAF. I told them to hang on a change would come. Reagan was that change and they are all retired now. I am retired from my first civilian career and close to retiring from my second. 0bama would not have won his first term with a candidate to run against him. McCain would have lost worse than Romney did if not for Palin. 0bama would not have been reelected with a real candidate to run. After the first debate I thought Romney looked much stronger than I thought he was. Then at the second debate he acted like a school boy. Must have been the advisors telling him he looked mean in the first debate. I wonder what panty waist the RINOs will field against Hillary? I really like Cruz but the RINOs will spend a fortune to defeat him in the primaries. Thank goodness Kris Krispy seems to be damaged goods now. Huckabee will f up the primaries again like he did in 12. I like Scott Walker but he’ll get trashed by the RINOs too. Bobby Jindal is probably our best bet. I think he is the real deal plus he is not a pasty white guy. I guess all we can do is pray for someone who realizes they must appeal to the conservative base first and foremost. Reagan got it and spoke his heart which is why he kicked ass twice.
I would have stayed home if Palin wasn't on the ticket. People in Texas are getting sick of the RINOs in DC. Hope that fever spreads to all states.
