Simferopol, Ukraine (CNN) -- [Breaking News Update, 10:02 a.m. ET] (CNN) -- Russia's upper house of parliament voted Saturday to approve the use of military force in Ukraine. The vote was unanimous.

[Original Story, published 9:23 a.m. ET]

(CNN) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin has asked the upper house of parliament for approval to send Russian troops into Ukraine's Crimea region to normalize the political situation there, the Kremlin said Saturday.

Due to the "extraordinary situation in Ukraine," Putin said, there are threats to the lives of Russian citizens and Russian military personnel based in the southern Crimean region.

It comes on the same day that the new pro-Russian leader of Crimea, Sergey Aksyonov, asked Putin for help in maintaining peace in the Black Sea peninsula -- where Russia has a major naval base at Sevastopol.

Prince Bandar has largely stayed out of Washington but held meetings with U.S. officials in the region. One was in September 2012. Sens. McCain and Graham, who were in Istanbul, met him in an opulent hotel suite on the banks of the Bosporus.

The United Nations??? LOL! That organ has been spineless and useless since it was created. Putin spits on them and Obama embraces them like a child embraces their blanket.

The U.N. Security Council will hold an urgent meeting on the crisis in Ukraine on Saturday after Russia announced plans to send armed forces into the autonomous Crimea region of the former Soviet republic.
A diplomat from Luxembourg, president of the 15-nation council this month, said the meeting would take place at 2:00 p.m. EST (1900 GMT) and was being convened at the request of Britain.

Yes he took that move off the chess board so Obama can’t look tough kicking him out.

When is the last time this has happened?

Media talking points today

This is a mostly Russian region ( ok to invade)
This region is different than any other part of country(ok to invade)
The local leaders and people are cheering in streets( ok to invade)
Happening so quickly no one could stop ( Obama not at fault)
No options for USA( not Obama fault)
UN and NATO not involved (wrong have treaty but not his fault)
All about safety of Russian troops and family( no it’s about gas pipelines and money.)

Russia has the veto so a resolution demanding Russian withdrawal won’t even be put up a for a vote.

People in Western Ukraine think the West is rich and powerful.
They have just received a rude wake up call.

If they’re looking for the cavalry to come riding over the hill, forget it. They’re on their own and they’re in no position to fight Russia.

“This is the change in America’s world standing that Obama has delivered... When he speaks... Putin and other world leaders laugh. If Reagan or Bush were President, Putin wouldn’t even consider invading Crimea.”

While Obama was studying Alinsky’s “Rules For Radicals”, Putin was studying Machiavelli’s “The Prince”.

“You guys are such BS’ers. Criticize Obama without any concrete alternative for action. You’re like liberals with Bush”

Here is what. I think Reagan would have done on Thursday when he saw 76th Shock Troops Division moving.

Today meeting with all country’s in the reaction and urging them to be voted into NATO.
All countries in region are now part of missile defense treaty.
He would have kicked out the ambassador.
Started moving forces to the region.

The Russian Ambassador is going to get a dressing down from the country that had the sun set on its empire?

Snort! The British overestimate their importance in the scheme of things.

Reagan would have had a “Humanitarian Mission” operating out of the Sevastopol Airport, before the Russians got there, even if he had to fly them in from Germany.

And we already have a US Airbase just 60-90 minutes flying time away, in Romania.

Yup. The Americans are hypocrites - they helped to overthrow a foreign dictator and American lives aren’t even imperiled. And in a country close to Russia, ethnic Russian and Russian-speaking Ukrainians lives are under real threat. And where does the West have the effrontery to tell Russia NOT to intervene to protect them?

How are Russian speakers in the Ukraine under threat? Are they being subjected to massacres? The only issue that has come up is Russian being demoted from being an official language. Russia is looking to annex the Crimea, and perhaps all of Ukraine. For the past hundred years, Russia's history has been one of land grabs. Nobody can say that our move against Gaddafi had anything to do with a land grab. Our policy in Libya and Ukraine is consistent - we have chosen to support the popular majority, and just as the Libyan people revolted against Gaddafi's decades of abuse, Ukraine's parliament has evicted Yanukovich by an overwhelming majority. I thought we should have let Gaddafi crush the insurrection for reasons of realpolitik, but there's no way that we were being hypocritical by toppling him via NATO airstrikes.
