Kremlin Clears Way for Force in Ukraine; Separatist Split Feared By ALISON SMALE and DAVID M. HERSZENHORN MARCH 1, 2014

SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine — As Russian armed forces effectively seized control of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula on Saturday, the Russian Parliament granted President Vladimir V. Putin the authority he sought to use military force in response to the deepening instability in Ukraine.

The authorization cited a threat to the lives of Russian citizens and soldiers stationed in Crimea and other parts of Ukraine, and provided a blunt answer to President Obama, who on Friday pointedly warned Russia to respect Ukraine’s territorial sovereignty.

Even before Mr. Putin’s statement in Moscow, scores of heavily armed soldiers had tightened their grip on the Crimean capital, Simferopol, surrounding government buildings, shuttering the airport, and blocking streets, where they deployed early Friday.

Large pro-Russia crowds rallied in the eastern Ukrainian cities of Donestk and Kharkiv, where there were reports of violence. In Kiev, the Ukrainian capital, fears grew within the new provisional government that separatist upheaval would fracture the country just days after civil unrest ended in the ouster of President Viktor F. Yanuovych, a Kremlin ally who fled to Russia.

Well, this is what happens when a true leader protects his country’s interests and frankly, he is backing the democratically elected president so once again, he is on the right side and we have been on the wrong side. imho, Putin is putting the hammer down on another arab spring type of event.

So who thinks Congress should now pass a formal declaration of war? Well, besides the military-industrial complex and the McCains in Congress.

Wasn't Crimea part of Russia, until Nikita Khrushchev inexplicably made it part of the Ukraine in the 1950s?

(The Russian legend is he was drunk when he did it)

Yup. And now Ukraine is rapidly unraveling as a country. Its too soon to say how all this will play out but I don’t expect the crisis to be resolved any time soon.

Khrushchev was still involved in the bitter power struggle that took place after Stalin’s death.

He was Premier of the Ukrainian SSR under Stalin, and Ukrainians held him responsible for much of what went on there.

So as a gesture, he wanted to win them over by a cheap political gesture of “giving” Ukraine The Crimea....Although in the Soviet Union, it really didn’t matter which SSR had control, Moscow was still going to call the shots there.

The comments are interesting. The left just doesn't get it. A true Reaganesque leader has a tone that demands respect. That tone is backed up by one hell of a stick that will be wielded if necessary.

Obama is a brat child that was elected and then reelected by brat children. In left wing verbiage, brat children are “Knuckleheads”.

There is nothing the US can or should do in Ukraine, unfortunately, given our current leadership.

Why a declaration of war?

We haven’t passed one since 1941.

What we should have been doing is arranging for fair negotiations between the two countries when there was still a chance to properly resolve the “Crimea Question.”

"Why a declaration of war?"

It unites the Country per the Constitution.
