VANCOUVER — A Canadian navy ship with more than 300 people on board is adrift in the Pacific Ocean in heavy seas after a fire in the engine room.

HMCS Protecteur was returning to its home port of Esquimalt, British Columbia when the blaze broke out Thursday night.

Several crew members aboard the 44-year-old supply ship suffered minor injuries from the fire. Sailors put out the flames, the Department of National Defence said Friday morning.

HMCS Protecteur is currently 630 kilometres northeast of Pearl Harbor and has limited power.

Not too many things worse than a main space fire. Wonder if this will bump up the planned retirement.

44 years old is VERY old for a saltwater ship.

Why not? Canada has the longest coastline of any country.

It certainly is. I remember doing unreps with this ship in the mid-80s. The ship I was on at the time was a newly commissioned FFG. It has since been decommissioned.

One eventually learns that even blatant, stated-ahead-of-time sarcasm often fails here. FR is an irony-free zone any more.

Got that right. Heavy seas w/o main engine power is dangerous for any ship. Especially old ships. Nice pic!

17 family members?? On a military naval ship?

Apparently it was like what we called a Tiger Cruise-family members meeting the ship and then riding on its last leg back from a cruise. My sons and my father rode my last ship when we returned from deployment. They had a blast. They came out to the ship in an LCAC, which I never had a chance to ride.

Thanks Gator...this was something I had not known about before. I did a quick Google search and found the below Q & A—so I guess spouses were excluded. Anyhow, it seems these are well managed so as to not interfere with shipboard discipline.

Q. Who can participate in Tiger Cruise?

A. Relatives and friends of crew members or embarked personal are eligible. By Navy regulations, spouses, significant others, fiancés, fiancées, girlfriends and/or boyfriends are not eligible. Immediate family members (parents, siblings, or children) will have priority over “other” relatives or friends if we run out of room.

Usually, but if they’re kept up properly, that’s just considered middle-aged. Most bulk carriers last 20 years and they’re not built anywhere near the specs for Naval ships.
