Maybe the EU should do something. Certainly we should not.
But if America were stronger and more decisive, a country like Russia would be more likely to think twice and hold off. Under the circumstances, however, Putin knows perfectly well that Obama will do nothing -- so why wouldn't Putin invade Ukraine??
To: Steelfish
Does Obama have any credibility left, even with his die-hard supporters?First the country watches as he's caught in lie after lie,now Putin uses him for a doormat.

Pay attention kids, MARXIST is a word that means different things in different places.
In the United States a MARXIST is a spoiled brat who majors in something useless in college, smokes pot, and goes to demonstrations to get laid. He later becomes a “community organizer” or Ivy League school professor for gender studies, and basically never grows up or gets a job.
But in Russia, a MARXIST is a strongman who brutally clamps down on domestic opposition, aggregates economic resources to himself and his henchmen, and uses aggressive military and diplomatic maneuvers to neutralize foreign opposition and expand the empire.
Don’t mistake the two, they are not the same!

The US, NATO, the EU...no one will do anything. And I am not saying they should. But I don’t see the Ukranians offering any resistance whatsoever. Why should anyone come to their aid?

Russia can certainly use a warm water port in the West.
To the extent that the Ukrainians of the West are capable of pluralistic governance, they should get their own enclave.

He doesn't have to fire a shot because the people in Crimea WANT him there. As soon as the pro-EU folks ousted the president the people in Crimea assembled their own local government which was pro-Russia and anti-EU.
If any shots get fired, it will be the people of Crimea trying to keep from getting sucked into the EU side of things.

Martin Armstrong - the smartest guy in the room in any room points out the the cycles of civil unrest and war between nations are converging. And to add to the mix, the cycle of third party political parties is rising.
He writes...
“The game is afoot. The dogs of war have been unleashed. We are entering perhaps the MOST DRAMATIC period of conflict we have ever seen since the fall of Rome. Our models are converging and that is not very good. This convergence is internal strife (civil unrest) combined with outright international war. The worst of these trends will start to make themselves know after October.”
I wouldn’t bet against him...

“NATO secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the allies will “coordinate closely” on the situation in Ukraine, which he termed “grave.””
I think this is going to do it - nothing like some serious and close coordinating to make Putin shake in his boots.

Most of the Crimeans want ties to Russia. This is a good thing. We’d be better off if the US would divide.
