Insurance no longer may hinder divorce
Philadelphia Inquirer ^ | 03/02/2014 | Robert Calandra

The Affordable Care Act is changing more than the way Americans buy health insurance.

It's making it simpler for unhappily married couples to uncouple.

Word is starting to spread among family law attorneys that in the post-ACA era, health insurance isn't the binder it once was for holding bad marriages together.

With more options available on the market and preexisting conditions no longer an issue, people once reluctant to divorce for fear of losing health insurance coverage would do well to reconsider. Since the ACA, "health insurance is not a good reason to stay married," said Margaret Klaw, a partner in the Philadelphia firm of Berner Klaw & Watson. "You shouldn't have to be married and maintain a fiction just to get health insurance.

That is until the spouse adds in the aca costs to the settlement. CHA CHING. Maybe it would be cheaper to keep him/her after all.

Never ever on earth as a factor of divorce been health insurance.

This is turning into a great opportunity for a sham-wow spoof..it bakes, it fries, it cleans, it frees of your job, your husband, your car payments, and that’s not all! The ACA is a miracle worker!

I’m in a fairly common position that if my wife and I were to divorce we would both be financially better off due to government hand outs available to her.

I often wonder how many people get “divorced” in order to get those hand outs, even though the couple doesn’t actually split.

It destroys health, jobs, marriages - is there anything it CAN’T do?

freed from the marriage lock

Making it economically advantageous to divorce a mate with a serious injury or disease is a good thing? Or why split up at all? Just get the divorce and let the feds pick up the health bill.

Or better yet, why get married at all? The wage earner can bring home the paycheck, get insurance for one adult, and the wife and kids can get federally subsidized insurance? It all works out as long as they don't 'fess up to who's the daddy.

Are they kidding me? Couple after couple are finding that they HAVE to get divorced to get affordable insurance since obamacare passed. For example, currently I buy employer-provided insurance after my retirement, but my employer won’t provide my wife that same option, but because I DO get employer insurance, my wife is NOT eligible for subsidies even though SHE is not eligible for insurance through my employer. (Of course, when obamacare kicks in for the rest of us this year, I’ll probably lose my insurance too, and then the problem will be “solved”: NEITHER of us will have insurance!)

One of my coworkers didn't get divorced for that reason but he never married the woman he lives with because he gets a better deal if the government pays for their child than if he marries her and has to pay himself.

Yeah it works, my son is married, but his wife maintianed her orginal name, and works part time so she is elgible for ACA free. They file seperate tax forms. Of course you get to pay for it.

baloney.

i just don’t buy it.

both sides lose a lot of assets to court and attorneys in a divorce. and then trying to buy a new obamacare plan that costs a lot more, covers less, is accepted in less places, and has a very high deductible?

people are itching to lose so much more money now and divorce? i just don’t buy the spin.
