Student Loans Entice Borrowers More for Cash Than a Degree
Wall Street Journal ^ | March 2, 2014 | JOSH MITCHELL

Some Americans caught in the weak job market are lining up for federal student aid, not for education that boosts their employment prospects but for the chance to take out low-cost loans, sometimes with little intention of getting a degree.

...

A number of factors are behind the growth in student debt. The soft jobs recovery and the emphasis on education have driven people to attain more schooling. But borrowing thousands in low-rate student loans—which cover tuition, textbooks and a vague category known as living expenses, a figure determined by each individual school—also can be easier than getting a bank loan. The government performs no credit checks for most student loans.

College officials and federal watchdogs can't say exactly how much of the U.S.'s swelling $1.1 trillion in student-loan debt has gone to living expenses. But data and government reports indicate the phenomenon is real. The Education Department's inspector general warned last month that the rise of online education has led more students to borrow excessively for personal expenses. Its report said that among online programs at eight universities and colleges, non-education expenses such as rent, transportation and "miscellaneous" items made up more than half the costs covered by student aid.

The report also found the schools disbursed an average of $5,285 in loans each to more than 42,000 students who didn't log any credits at the time. The report pointed to possible factors such as fraud in addition to cases of people enrolling without serious intentions of getting a degree.

Capella Education Co., which runs online schools, examined student costs and debt at institutions—public and private—in Minnesota and concluded that between a quarter and three-quarters of loans taken out by students were for non-education expenses.

Same here. But there was one hot chick at the registrar’s office who at least explained to me how much i will owe. After the first year, I dabbled in cash jobs and it was a better life/learning experience being independent of the system. I still remembered my fratmates STILL heavily in debt 5 years after graduation and I’m an 08’ grad.

The above link says in certain circumstances they are dischargeable in bankruptcy as does the link below, but it sounds like it doesn’t happen often.

This link has FAQs about discharging them and has a chart:

I need a link for that please. I checked into this a lot for someone recently and I found nothing that said student loans are forgiven ten years after they are contracted.

I think you are mistaken.

Financial aid is the new welfare.

These kids will just run up their debt and Obama will make sure they never have to repay.

The responsible students who scrimp and work to put themselves through school will be screwed.

Good. I’m glad. Because it was a joke.

I’m sorry about that. I thought it would be obvious, but given some of the stuff that idiot has ACTUALLY said, I should have known better.

Cheer up! There are thousands of ways to bilk money from Uncle Sucker.

Maybe you could become an Obamacare 'Guide' (or whatever it is they call them). I understand the opportunities for kickbacks, bribes and outright theft of funds are simply mind-boggling...

I actually looked into that.
There are two categories here in Indiana.

A state navigator has to be basically at the level of an insurance agent, takesspecified courses, online exam, background checks, license fees, etc.

A federal navigator has to be a member of MoveOn, SEIU, Organizing for America, or Center for American Progress.

The first one was too much work and I was disqualified on the second as a registered R voter, LOL.
