Much better article with far more information -

http://www.seattlepi.com/news/article/Crack-in-Columbia-dam-affects-hydroelectric-system-5283908.php

Does not sound like anything to be too concerned about since it is a spillway. The system of dams in the Columbia Basin are very beneficial to those who live here as well as customers far away. I would love to see us expand hydroelectric energy production because it is so cheap, but the greens hate it.

Lol....

My brother was an electrical engineer on the three Columbia dams. I remember him telling me that one got poured ....backwards. That is....mirror image. Big snafu. I imagine a lot of drillin’, fillin, and whatelse was needed to wire and plumb it. I’m just guessin’.....but I’d say it’s the prime suspect for going boink. Wonder if that little error ever got out of the office trailor??

NEVER live downhill from any damn(for the ELF’s) dam. Or too close to any riverbank either.

Thanks for posting that. It was MUCH more informational. Sounds like it is nothing to get bothered about. It is not holding back water. It is just a really big speed bump in the spillway to slow down the water to reduce erosion downstream. Even if it fails, it is not going to collapse downstream dams.

It may or may not overstress dams downstream but it will flood people if it does break. Spillways hold back entire lakes. It will also cause power outages as flooding will damage electrical generation. Expect more of this to begin to hit the headlines in the near future as these dams and structures move past their 50 year projected lifetimes. It would scare the public if they knew how many dams have huge cracks could break at any time.

And the greens somehow got hydro to be deemed not green and not renewable.
