Faith Spotted Eagle figures that building a crude oil pipeline from Canada to the U.S. Gulf Coast would bring little to Indian Country besides more crime and dirty water, but she doubts that Native Americans will ever be able to get the U.S. government to block the $7 billion project.
“There is no way for Native people to say no — there never has been,” said Spotted Eagle, 65, a Yankton Sioux tribal elder from Lake Andes, S.D. “Our history has caused us not to be optimistic. . . . When you have capitalism, you have to have an underclass — and we’re the underclass.”
Opponents may be down after a State Department study found that the proposed Keystone XL pipeline would not contribute to global warming. But they haven’t abandoned their goal of killing what some call the “black snake.”
In South Dakota, home to some of the nation’s poorest American Indians, tribes are preparing for nonviolent battle with “resistance training” aimed at TransCanada, the company that wants to develop the 1,700-mile pipeline.
Although organizers said they want to keep their strategy a secret, they’re considering vigils, civil disobedience and blockades to thwart the moving of construction equipment and the delivery of materials.

They are poor for a reason and it ain’t because they lack opportunity.
It is just looney the way they think this one pipeline would change everything if installed.
Historically, last stands haven’t always been kind to them. Except for Yellow Hair, of course.
Another example of why Native Americans got so royally screwed in the past.
Instead of trying to block a pipeline which will benefit EVERYBODY, they should be asking for JOBS that the pipeline will generate.
There is a greater environmental threat from shipping via rail lines than through a pipeline.
lol. 7 billion project? Huh. They will be lucky to do it with 50 billion. I love how government brags about how cheap something is because it is never the case.
Much easier to whine about someone holding you down and do nothing than to get off your behind and be productive!
I would venture to guess what they really want is some payoff to tribal leaders to quiet down. It’s like Hillary ranting against various large corporations until they donate money to her campaign. It’s a racket.
How much money are they getting from the Saudis?
Cut the power so they can’t have white devils electricity.
The government isn’t building this. Private industry is. All the government is doing is standing in the way.
So... learn to swing a pipe wrench, or cook a burger for those that do, and join the overclass.
Except the Keystone XL project isn't a government project.
It's a private company's project, Trans-Canada's.
And private companies aren't in the business of turning $7 billion projects into $50 billion projects. That's not to say that leftists aren't eager to inflate project costs...
Yup.
The objection to Keystone is based entirely on the fact they have chosen to make it a symbol of ecological destruction, not any damage the pipeline itself might cause.
It’s not a very logical symbol, but I guess a symbol has the meaning you choose to attach to it.
