Thad Cochran Is No Reagan Conservative (good history, Cochran was rarely with Reagan)

It remains fashionable these days for Republicans to cloak themselves in the legacy of Ronald Reagan, especially those who served in Washington during the 1980s. Thad Cochran and his supporters have already tried to remind the people of Mississippi of his steadfast conservatism. But don’t be fooled. Thad Cochran was no soldier in Reagan’s army.

Let us begin our story in Kansas City, at the Republican National Convention in July 1976, the nation’s 200th birthday. Ronald Reagan, the former two-term governor of California, decided to challenge the unpopular President, Gerald Ford, who had angered a good many citizens by pardoning Richard Nixon before any charges had ever been brought in the Watergate case. His foreign policy was also a disaster, allowing South Vietnam to fall to the North without any response and signing the Helsinki Accords, essentially handing the Soviets control of Eastern Europe.

Reagan, seeking to give Republicans a conservative choice, stumbled out of the blocks during the early primary season, losing the first six contests, but he roared back in North Carolina and Texas, as well as other more conservative Southern and Western states. Arriving at the convention, neither candidate had a majority of delegates. In order to win the nomination, the uncommitted delegates would have to choose a side, and both camps heavily lobbied them.

National attention, though, focused on Mississippi, as its delegation, led by Clarke Reed, adopted a “unit rule,” whereby the entire voting bloc would swing to one candidate based on the majority vote of the delegation. So, in other words if 16 of the 30 delegates voted for Reagan, the whole 30 vote bloc would go to Reagan. This was a major prize for each camp.

Realistically, what are the chances of getting rid of Cochran in the Primary?

As of today, maybe 30 to 40 per cent. But a lot could change between now and primary day. For example, there could be another big hurricane like Katrina, which would reduce the chances to zero.

We've THAD ENOUGH and he's getting hit on TV ads now, and getting hit pretty hard for his big porker, anti-Reagan qualities, so it's not going quite like Haley and his DC crowd originally thought.

McDaniel has solid TEA Party backing from Freedom Works and at least two other TP groups who are currently helping him get his message out.
