A Struggling RadioShack Will Close 20% of Its Stores
NY TIMES ^ | 3/4/14 | Elizabeth A Harris

RadioShack said Tuesday it would close about 1,100 of its stores in the United States, as weak holiday results prompted significant losses.

RadioShack has been struggling to revive its fortunes in recent years, in the face of a changed consumer electronics environment. In February 2013, it hired a new chief executive, Joseph C. Magnacca, from Walgreen, to help turn things around. But so far a turnaround has been elusive and its financial results have been deteriorating.

The staff is not only low-intelligence, but “on ya.” You come in the door and they’re on ya. I go there once a year or so for a simple mono earphone so I can listen to AM radio in bed. They last about a year and cost about $5. I know what I want and I know where to find it in the store, but the staff person insists on trying to show me something else.

Even years ago I avoided Radio Shack because you couldn’t just go in, grab what you wanted and check out. The cashier always wanted my name and address and phone number, even if I was paying with cash. I figured they were trying to build a customer list, but there was something creepy about.

Good riddance, Radio Shack!

Radio Shack was perfectly positioned to jump into the growing micro-tech market since the mid 90s. That they have failed is a sign of bad merchandising, bad marketing and pricing, and overall bad management with weak long-term visions. I used to love to wander around those places as a kid in the 70s, but I could rattle off ten or so fatal strategic flaws in the ensuing years that any moron who ever worked in retail could have called.

I used to call them “Lousyette”. Poor quality, half the stuff you ordered wasn’t in stock.

Allied Radio was the place to go.

SCool. Maybe it’s a good day to find a closeout bargain on a laptop.

That sounds like a Tandy idea!

Does anyone remember Lafayette Electronics?

Yep, I do indeed. I remember going to one of their stores in Florida in the '70s. I didn't realize that the FCC's CB radio changes was what crippled them.

Radio Shack did this to themselves. They ditched the hobbyist as their customer base and became a cell phone store. There was a time you could walk into any Radio Shack and the guy behind the counter knew what you were talking about when you were looking for parts to fix your electronics. You walk in there now and ask for a 1 watt 250 ohm resistor and you get the deer in the headlights look.
