The Kremlin’s own pollster released a survey on Monday that showed 73% of Russians reject it. In phrasing its question posed in early February to 1,600 respondents across the country, the state-funded sociologists at WCIOM were clearly trying to get as much support for the intervention as possible: “Should Russia react to the overthrow of the legally elected authorities in Ukraine?” they asked. Only 15% said yes — hardly a national consensus.

Why would they want us to think this?

Maybe Putin isn’t as secure as he thinks. Things can happen quickly in Russia.

The article is very biased and the author clearly opposes the Russian intervention. He wants to generate sympathy for newly appointed leadership of Ukraine. However, the poll is supposedly from a Russian source. I personally doubt the veracity of the poll but that doesn’t mean I agree with what the Russians are doing. Anyhow, the Ukrainians should decide their own future.

I was assuming it came from Russian sources. You seem to think Time just made it up out of whole cloth.
You could be right.
It probably isn’t wildly popular, although Russians in general probably understand the reasons for it were not mystical ideas about Mother Russia but a need to make it clear that Russia would protect the gas pipelines.
I think the point has been made, and Putin doesn’t have any need to stay there.
In addition, there will probably be some political changes in the future. I can see the Ukraine, which is an artificial construction anyway, splitting up, but unless the Ukrainian nationalists go bonkers, it will probably be peaceful. And whether the poll is truthful or not, it is meant to reinforce Putin’s position.
Ha! Have to share that one today.

Note that the poll was taken in early February, well before Yanukovich was forced out of Ukraine and well before Putin absconded with the Crimea. I don’t know why we are expected to give it much credence.

A Time article about a Kremlin poll? Maybe when liars lie about lying liars, some truth will spill out ... but I doubt it ...
Perhaps we ought to apply Occam’s Razor here....the simplest explanation is probably the correct one.
Maybe it IS unpopular.
Now, the question is, will Putin CONVINCE the populace action is needed, will Putin IGNORE the populace and do what he thinks is best, or will Putin OBEY the will of the populace?
