No discharge petition on immigration?

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Tuesday that she would not be able to get the needed signatures for a procedural tactic to force a vote on immigration reform.

"We'll never get to 218 on the discharge petition,” she told Sirius XM Radio’s Julie Mason at an event to be aired Tuesday evening. ”Because the Republicans generally won't sign, but the fact that it is there and the outside mobilization is saying all we want is a vote."

House Republican leaders have been reluctant to vote on a comprehensive immigration reform bill. GOP leaders in January released a set of principles on the issue, but those have yet to be translated into a bill with significant backing.

Earlier this year, Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) claimed “widespread doubt” among Republicans about President Obama’s ability to follow the law has made it “difficult to move any immigration legislation” for the time being.

The three House Republicans who co-sponsored the Democratic immigration reform bill have said they would not sign a discharge petition, which requires 218 signatures to force a vote on the House floor.

Pelosi said her team would decide how to proceed in the next few days.

"I will be meeting today and tomorrow, as I did last week with stakeholders on the immigration issue about how we'll come to a decision about the immigration bill," Pelosi said.

Not a surprise this won't work since GOP is in the majority. It has only been used twice successfully in the last few decades.

I first became aware of the discharge petition in the early '90's when the Wall St Journal ran a series of seven articles exposing how it was used. At that time the petition was secret so members of congress could sponsor or support a bill publicly but remove their names from the petition in private. Hypocrites.

Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma organized a successful effort where a member would look at the petition and memorize names on it to expose the fraud. This ended the petition's secrecy.

Eek! a Discharge Petition!

I wonder why anyone would think that Obama would be "unable" to follow the law on anything?

Somebody needs to tell Boehner that we don’t trust him either. He’s just the GOP wing of the Treason Lobby.

McIntyre, Matheson, Barrow, Lipinski, Rahall, 2 Black Democrats and 1 open borders Latino are opposed.

Rep. Mike McIntyre (D-N.C.) objects to “granting amnesty or any type of legal status which pardons people in violation of our laws,” he said in a statement published on his website.

But Boehner said it wasn’t amnesty.

“Rep. John Barrow (Ga.), another conservative Democrat, is an opponent of the Senate bill’s “amnesty” provisions that create a path to citizenship for eligible residents in the U.S. illegally. Republicans are targeting Barrow’s seat this cycle. Barrow’s office did not respond to requests for comment. “
