An 18-year-old senior in New Jersey is now suing her parents for immediate financial support and trying to force them to pay for her college education. Rachel Canning, the daughter of a retired Lincoln Park police chief, is living with the family of her best friend. The teen had it declared in court that she is nonemancipated and dependent on her parents financially.

“Surely a retired police chief can afford to send his daughter to some college. State colleges don’t cost that much. Unless he thinks women should be kept barefoot and pregnant.”

The judge said “where doe this end?” “Do I get 12 year old’s in here suing because they didn’t get an iPhone, etc.”
That’s true. However, I am not against approriate tough love. When my younger son turned 18, stopped going to school and had no job, I told him his older brother who had just gotten back from Middle East military service told me his friends were paying their parents $200 a month room and board. I said I would like him to start paying me $200 a month, and he said, in that case I’ll move out. He did, lived with 5 friends in a $350 a month house. I encouraged a friend I had helped to give him a job but not take any bullxxxx from him. It worked out well, he married a college graduate, has 2 children, and a good job he created for himself. He was dyslexic and did not do well in school. I used to have him help me with carpentry and other house maintenance projects. He is now supervising a crew of 10 on rehabing large condos.
Life is hard.
It’s even harder when you’re stupid.
Real life doesn’t look anything like The Disney Channel shows that these kids grew up on. The Gimme’ Dat! Generation has much to learn the hard way, I fear.
HAs anyone told her she is now REQUIRED to pony up for Obamacare, yet?
I don’t think ability to pay is the issue here.

I think there is more to this story than what people have read.In this economy life sure isn’t easy for 18 year olds even with lots of brains with no home and no car to boot.I don’t think the parents are the angels in the least.
I read a lot. A few years back I got into reading about the people who came over and settled Massachusetts.
It opened my eyes as to how the families taught each other how to make a living, and the boys were taught at an early age to build a house! They, alongside of their fathers chopped down huge trees and prepared the land, which had never been more than a forest. They removed boulders, removed stumps, plowed and leveled and built a home, at ages of 8, 9, 10 on up to such young ages.
They would never have thought to be so irreverent to their very bloodline relatives, but instead were thankful for a man showing them how to survive in life, and well.
This boy at 18 not only shows no love but if he was really serious would’ve buckled down and learned something YEARS before the ripe age of 18. He’s an ingrate. Probably would waste any money or attempts to educate him, because up till now he hasn’t already learned the people who housed him, fed him, loved him, already were there for him.

Unfortunately, in the world of today that we are leaving our kids, all she has to do is get knocked up by the boyfriend, and nine months later she’ll be making the big bucks.
Free Housing, free food, free medical care, free child care, spending money, a big “tax Check” every year for vacations and plasma TV’s, even if she doesn’t work. Never-ending student “loans” that her and the boyfriend can spend like drunken sailors. As long as they don’t get married, and she doesn’t list him as “father” (making him liable) they can live like inner-city kings, with whatever he makes as just extra cash.
If she’s smart enough to hook up with the ACORN types, she can pull down the equivalent of around $40k a year, just for being a breeder.
From reading the original post they did tough Love.We never had to do that with our 6 children.Did have rules and they moved out because of them,only 3 of them did.NEVER LET THEM MOVE BACK IN.
What makes these kids think they are so entitled?
My husband was a career officer in the US Army. We didn’t have much money, we moved frequently, and raised our two children in the 70’s and 80’s. I shopped at thrift stores, but we did send both of them to college.
One day recently I apologized to them for not getting them everything they wanted for every Christmas. They both said, “We had a great life! We were so happy! No need to apologize. We didn’t miss a thing!”
I forgot to include things like Subsidized phones, subsidized utilities, even a subsidized car and gas for getting to “Class” in.
The daughter was apparently not a total failure. She was accepted to at least 4 colleges, including a $20,000 scholarship. I suspect there are layers and layers of complexity here. Being the daughter of a police chief may not be a bed of roses.
Way back when, my youngest daughter ‘declared’ that WE OWED her a college education.
Whether she meant that literally or not, I didn’t wait to find out.
Told her would be glad to GIVE her College but she better hone up on her Math and such and be prepared to move to Colorado, New York, Connecticut or Maryland.
When she ‘questioned’ me I told her I would probably be able to get her an Academy appointment IF she got her grades up.
“I DON’T WANT TO GO IN THE ARMY”.
“Oh, now that is too bad, because if the Academies don’t ‘want’ you, you can go in the Service after HS Graduation and earn college credits then use the GI BIll.”
“Now, on the other hand, your Mother and I will continue to allow you to live here as long as you wish, rent free, you are now working, so keep working and enrol in a JC or CC then go to a 4 year college if you wish AND we will HELP YOU as long as you are serious about it.”
She ended up going to CC for a year, went to and Graduated VA TECH got married shortly thereafter etc etc etc.
If the courts ‘side’ with this suit and FORCE her parents to pay her entire college, we can figure parenting as ‘we’ knew it is REALLY over....
college is not a necessity. she is 18 and a legal adult. spoiled, but an adult.

Wo cares,If you read the article she moved out.Our rule was if you move out all funding cut.I would take the car too and any bills we were paying.If she’s so smart let her get a job.
You assume the parents are good little angels and can do no wrong though.Maybe they just don’t care and pushed her out the door.Well,they did.The worst way to end a relationship in a family is in a court of law.The parents should had been smarter than that since they are the adults!Right?I bet there is much more in this case than what we have read.

‘On or about October 5, 2012, Rachel committed a theft on my credit card, which card was given to her for the purpose of purchasing presents for my husband’s birthday.’
Referencing another theft, she said: ‘During at incident in April 2011, Rachel stole $100 from my purse, snuck out of the house, at midnight, attended a party…. And returned home by taxi at 3.30am on a weeknight.’
