There aren’t any mojados out here-too many of us native Hispanics don’t tolerate them, and that is nice. The nearest Home Depot is 22 miles away, so most of us work for one or several contractors whenever they have work-I’ve been independent for nearly 10 years, and there is less than half as much remodeling work now, nothing new being built, and con-artist customers who stiff you are too common-and it has all happened since this administration came into office and made everything FUBAR...

“There aren’t any mojados out here-too many of us native Hispanics don’t tolerate them, and that is nice.”

BOL, our yard man worked for another company. About 20 years ago, he came to me about going on his own. I suggested that he finish up getting his citizenship and then we could talk.

I wrote a letter for him, which he used in the process. After he became a citizen, I told him to go to our local bank and see the manager I had known for years to get a start up loan. I gave him a letter to use.

He did, got his loan and started to work. 4 of us in our neighborhood hired him to take care of our yards. A few friends around town got tired of the revolving door yard guys and hired our friend. They in turn recommended him to others. Now he only takes on new customers when he loses a current one due to moving, illness or loss of their job.

A couple of years later, he bought a home, and I wrote another letter to help him get the loan and several of our friends/his customers wrote letters for him.

A few year later my wife and I had a come to reality meeting with his wife. She was dragging her feet re getting her citizenship. My wife told her of women, who did the same, were sometimes not allowed back in the country after a visit to Mexico or emergency visit home. So we wrote another letter, and a year later, she became a citizen.

Now to the funny part, this amigo has a great sense of humor and is all ways upbeat and positive.

About a year ago, he was really mad and in a foul mood.

So I asked him what was wrong. He had been offered a large job and needed to hire a few guys for a few days. So he went to our local Home Depot. He talked to a few and left.

They were demanding $20+/hour plus lunch and transportation and had no work clothes or boots.

So he and some of his brothers did the job on weekends.

Now a standing joke is when we have a larger extra job, and my wife or I ask him if he is going to Home Depot to get the extra workers. After a few choice words, he stops and smiles and tell us when he and his bros will be working.
