'Vlad the Great': Putin's Approval Rating Soars in Russia

Russian President Vladimir Putin may have to endure the stern disapproval of U.S. President Barack Obama, and the occasional insult from German Chancellor Angela Merkel, as a result of his invasion of Ukraine. But at home, his approval ratings have soared to nearly 70 percent, up from just above 60 percent in December. Over 70 percent of Russians support Putin's tactics in the Crimea; fewer than one in five oppose his policy.

The Russian parliament is expected to support Crimean secession, the Wall Street Journal reports, and even some Russian opposition leaders are praising Putin. One quoted by the Journal claims: "If Putin returns Crimea to Russia without blood, he will go down in history as a great, and there's nothing you can do about that." Or, as Charles Krauthammer quipped Friday: "Catherine the Great took Crimea, Vlad (the Great?) won it back."

I understand why Pooty Poot went into Crimea —they have military installations there that they need to protect—period. Vladdy did halt going into Ukraine directly. He is making President O (Zero) look more inept day by day. Vladdy may have to go into Ukraine eventually — why? Because the dude who wants to run in new election is a friggin neo-Nazi. He was thinking about that for years. It seems to me that the plans to achieve the takeover are too well oiled to be put up in a couple of weeks. Some of Russia’s plans were clearly years in the making, including one to sever Crimea from Ukraine through Moscow’s political support for sovereignty and even reunification.

In order to take Kosovo, NATO and US airforces needed 80 days of heavey pombing and scores of 1 millon worth missiles. Bombing Yugoslavia and the aftermath in Kosovo cost NATO and US some $8 billion. Rebuilding the bombed infrastructures in Kosovo - $18 billion. One year of KFOR peacekeeping came at $25 billion, multiplying by eight: $200 billion.

Russia took over Crimea in a few days, WITHOUT firing a shot.

That is amazing, and not in a good way for US taxpayers.

You need to understand the Russian psychology....they need and applaud strong leaders, for good or ill, going all the way back to the early princes and Mongol Khans. Although Stalin held nothing but contempt for his people(s), they loved him in spite of his brutality.

Putin will go down in Russian history as one of their greatest and most beloved leaders. Count on it.

And I didn’t count the price of the camp Bondsteel, built for the US military in Kosovo, which cost $350 million to build and runs at a cost of $148 million a year, since year 2,000. After being a secret prison for the CIA during the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, now it’s almost deserted but not closed! 750 service men rot of boredom there.

The biggest country in the world (17,098,242 sq.k. 11.5% of the earth land, spread on two continents Asia /Europe) needs a strong leader like Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Alexander III. Weak leaders never lasted long in power in Russia.

The truth is that Russians recognize in Putin a true Russian patriot, who cares first about his country. Even if as president, he is tough, ruthless, and determined. The funny thing is that in his personal circle and life, he's seen as , withdrawn, introvert and sentimental. His love for animals is a sign for me that's the case. He looks at them as he never does at people.
