Political foes take aim at McConnell for CPAC rifle moment

U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell walked onto the stage at the Conservative Political Action Conference last week holding a flintlock musket over his head has seemed to give ammunition to Democrats and McConnell’s Republican primary foe.

Both U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth, Kentucky’s lone Democratic Congressman, and GOP U.S. Senate challenger Matt Bevin have sought to declare the moment a gaffe.

Calling McConnell’s entrance “pathetic,” Yarmuth tried to add a political and historical interpretation of the moment.

“If you had a caption that you would run under that picture it would just say desperation,” Yarmuth said of McConnell. “He understandably feels like he’s Custer at Little Big Horn these days.”

McConnell brought the gun on stage as a gift for U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, and the awkward exchange was called “perhaps the oddest moment of the convention” from Washington Post blog ‘The Fix.’

Watch the Post’s video of McConnell’s entrance:

Bevin’s campaign, borrowed a line from Courier-Journal columnist Joe Gerth’s March 9 column comparing McConnell’s entrance to “Michael Dukakis riding in a tank.”

The Hill ran a story based on a Facebook post from Bevin’s campaign comparing Dukakis and McConnell in a meme captioned “sometimes career politicians try too hard.”

Meanwhile, Kentucky’s other U.S. Sen. Rand Paul ran away with top honors winning the presidential straw poll with a huge margin.

Back in Kentucky, McConnell’s campaign literature reflects the support of Paul with a prominently placed “Rand Paul endorsed” seal on direct mailing sent out this month.

Mitch, you might have brought a gun, but you are NO Charlton Heston. How pathetic.

Which is ANOTHER reason why I’d never back Rand Paul-—he doesn’t have the integrity or guts of a Ted Cruz.

Just look at that turkey neck clown. Holding it in the middle makes me wonder if he even knows which is the business end.

I thought CPAC was a conservative conference. What was Mitch McConnell doing there?

“U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell walked onto the stage at the Conservative Political Action Conference...”

This was no conservative group.

I'd wondered where I had seen that gesture before...

...then I remembered, my daughter's marching band!

Probably used the same wooden rifle, too.

You know when McConnell and the rifle was mentioned on FR the first time I ridiculed McConnell’s pseudo macho effort (and passed the information on to others). At the time I had not seen the c-span coverage. I had only read the report of it on the FR posting.

I was watching my recording of a panel at c-span that had Coburn as a member. Lo and behold at the end of the panel McConnell came out waving the rifle and then presented it to Coburn for his years of service. I was shocked and felt fooled. I had had no idea it was a present to Coburn.

We Freepers don’t need to give someone a black eye by omission of pertinent facts. It makes us as bad of our opponents.

Everything about his appearance at CPAC was painful to watch. His speech was a horrible mix of whining and begging. He had to read the entire thing from the teleprompters which really makes you doubt what he said. The gun part looked silly because there wasn’t any apparent reason for him to be carrying it. Is this really what the majority of voters in Kentucky want leading the Senate, or even representing their state?

No surprise there, birds of a feather.
