Scientist Urges Withdrawal of His Own "Breakthrough" Stem Cell Research Monday, 10 Mar 2014 12:56 PM A Japanese scientist called on Monday for his own headline-grabbing study on stem cells to be withdrawn from publication, saying its findings had now been thrown into too much doubt. The research - hailed when it came out in January as a breakthrough that could herald a new era of medical biology - was covered widely in Japan and across the world after it was published in the highly reputable science journal Nature. But since then, there have been reports that other scientists have been unable to replicate the Japanese team's results and that there may have been problems with its data and images. "It is no longer clear what is right," Teruhiko Wakayama, a professor at Japan's University of Yamanashi who was part of the researcher team, told public broadcaster NHK. The study, described as game changing by independent experts asked to comment on it when it was published, appeared to show a simple way to reprogram mature animal cells back into an embryonic-like state that would allow them to generate many types of tissue.

I wonder if this was the climate change of medicine.

On the surface it sounds like an honest and humble researcher realizing a mistake was made and therefore a retraction was in order. I hope there are more like him.

published in the highly reputable science journal Nature.

Actually, Nature has a record of publishing this kind of questionable junk. Global Warming is only the best-known example.

Well, the cold fusion guys (Pons and Fleishman) were correct, but many who tried to duplicate the results failed due to poor technique and/or anti-confirmation bias.

The guy who got the positive results needs to go back into the lab to confirm it himself and nail down the appropriate parameters needed to succeed.

The original scientist corrected his mistake. Globull science cannot be
retracted because of the grants and the money involved. to much invested in the scam.

Can't be. The scientist in question threw cold water on his results when they couldn't be replicated. Seems to me the peer review process in this case was allowed to work.

Can't say that about Michael Mann, the fraud scientist behind "global warming" who faked his own data, never allowed peer review to happen, and set out to destroy anyone who disagreed with him.

This case is NOTHING like global warming fraud.

Nature is not a peer reviewed journal. Those in the hard sciences actually laugh at it since so many rush to publish in Nature rather than do the work needed for other scholarly journals.

“Research scientists are the primary audience for the journal, but summaries and accompanying articles are intended to make many of the most important papers understandable to scientists in other fields and the educated general public. Towards the front of each issue are editorials, news and feature articles on issues of general interest to scientists, including current affairs, science funding, business, scientific ethics and research breakthroughs. There are also sections on books and arts. The remainder of the journal consists mostly of research papers (articles or letters), which are often dense and highly technical. Because of strict limits on the length of papers, often the printed text is actually a summary of the work in question with many details relegated to accompanying supplementary material on the journal’s website.
There are many fields of scientific research in which important new advances and original research are published as either articles or letters in Nature. “

More than a decade ago I posted on the Internet a little book (less than 100 pages) free for downloading as a layman’s guide to stem cells and cloning. I now have it at my blogpage and it can be copied at will. Link is on my profile page, if anyone needs an update on what stem cells are and how they are being exploited and in some cases abused. Michael Mann is a Snake Oil Salesman. He is a hoaxer. His scientific hockey stick is bull hockey. If AGW is ever proven to be true this charlatan should get zero credit with his trumped up research. So sue me.

Oh definitely, mollusks, Crustaceans, and reptiles. Michael Mann doesn't compromise when it comes to his hockey stick.
