Kasich calls for income tax cut, hike on cigarette tax
Columbus Dispatch ^ | 3/11/14 | Joe Vardon. Jim Siegal

Posted on 03/11/2014 2:11:59 PM PDT by DallasBiff

The net for Ohioans is a $174 million tax cut over the next three years.

Kasich proposes funding an 8.5 percent income tax-cut for all tax brackets — a $2.2 billion reduction over the next three years — by raising the state’s tax on a pack of cigarettes 60 cents, from $1.25 to $1.85, while also taxing other tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes, at an equivalent rate. That would generate about $850 million during the next three years.

Kasich also wants to raise the Commercial Activity Tax on gross receipts for businesses from 0.26 percent to 0.3 percent, a roughly 15-percent increase providing $743 million in three years; and implement a gradual 2.75 percent tax on oil and gas extracted from horizontally drilled and fractured wells, generating $874 million in three years.

Why raise any taxes? How does that not totally invalidate the idea of tax cuts?

fascist liberal smoke nazi? The constitution guarantees you a right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Nowhere does it guarantee you the right to smoke tax free tobacco and the fact of the matter is, second hand smoke infringes on the rights of others who are forced to inhale it, like children who end up with chronic respiratory problems and unborn children that are born with countless birth defects as a result of momma’s nasty habit. I don’t care how you feel about it frankly. I love it. Go Kasich!

Kasich is trying to eliminate the Ohio income tax. That is no simple task. In accomplishing this, he is going to have to make adjustments but, in the end, we end up with no state income tax and that will be excellent for Ohio so I am not going to bust his balls over this because, more than anything else, it’s good policy. I say this as someone who was born and raised in Ohio and who has paid countless thousands of dollars into Ohio income taxes, property taxes, AND sales taxes.

So you folks would be OK with it if he had increased the tax on guns instead?

The man has a state to run. He has to get money from somewhere.

So raise it on a small minority of the population?

I have a better idea - raise the tax on bread, and all the ingredients needed to to make it an equivalent amount, thus equally taxing everyone.

One day it will be something you do. What an ugly attitude you have.

That's it...a carbohydrate tax (what's your carbo-footprint) If you want to decrease a behavior, tax it. So tax fat people...and smokers.

The non-smoking Atkins diet people get off Scott-free.

My condolences on the loss of your mother - I seriously doubt she raised you to be such an ugly person.

I don’t live in Ohio, so this should make no nevermind to me - however the concept of applauding the targeting of one group of people through taxation to benefit an entirely different group of people just goes against my grain.

I don’t eat a lot of prepared food, lets jack up the cost of that and buy me off with a property tax cut. LOL

If you have a problem with eliminating the Ohio state income tax, it is you who needs an attitude adjustment, especially if you’re an Ohioan. As far as the cigarettes go, my attitude is right on the money. Second hand smoke makes children sick and harms fetuses and first hand smoke causes billions of dollars of health related expenses that tax payers and non-smokers get stuck paying for. So I’ll say it again, this is good policy all the way around.

I do live in Ohio and Kasich came to a financially bankrupt state that is now the 6th most solvent in the nation with a billion dollar rainy day fund.

He is better than any governor we’ve had that I remember, he doesn’t say a lot, he’s not a media hound. That’s good except we don’t know what he’s thinking.

He’s pro-second amendment.
He’s rape/incest/life of mother pro-life.
Based on this article he’s not opposed to taxes being raised.

So, he’s a mixed bag fiscal conservative, and probably a GOP-E.

He’s done well with Ohio’s economy. On most everything else he’s been fairly quiet.

Ohio has had some bad governors for a while. Even with his faults, Kasich is an improvement.

The Constitution doesn't give you a "right" to your own "facts."

No one is "forced" to inhale SHE, nor does it cause the things you claim - while there is a possible slight increase in the risk of health problems of chronic and constant SHS exposure, there are no FACTS that it causes anything.

Pushing LSM and special interest talking points doesn't fly around here, and you should know that.
