A year before launching his Republican U.S. Senate campaign, Greg Brannon urged people not to vote for the partys presidential nominee, saying a vote for Mitt Romney would advance tyranny.
Brannon also said Romney and President Barack Obama, a Democrat, despise the Constitution, as he minimized the differences between the two major parties.
The comments came in a blog that Brannon co-wrote on the website of Founders Truth, a group he helped found.
The Cary physician is one of eight Republicans vying in a May 6 primary to challenge Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan. In January he acknowledged not voting for Romney, his partys last presidential nominee.
Brannon, 53, is standing by his statements.
Im a lifelong Republican who firmly believes that we will continue to lose elections if we dont nominate candidates who will stand on principle, he said in a statement. Moderate Republicans have given us out-of-control spending, unsustainable debt and bigger government. Enough is enough.
It was at a January forum in Winston-Salem that Brannon mentioned not voting for Romney, saying he had supported abortion rights. Romney once supported abortions but said as president he would sign legislation banning them. You cannot ever waver on life, Brannon said at the forum.
He used stronger language in the June 2012 post.
Voters need to vote in light of the obvious truth that no substantial difference exists between Barack Hussein Obama and Willard Mitt Romney, he wrote. Understanding and applying this simple truth is liberating.

So did a lot of us...
you hang on tight to your MAYBE
its Willard youre talking about..
He could care less..
Hmm...an admitted Republican who voted for 0bama.
However, it’s quite nice of him to accept all due blame for saddling America with four more years of Mr. “I have a pen and I have a phone”, our tsarist fundraiser-in-chief.
What do you know—a Republican candidate that doesn’t parse words on his commitment to freedom and the constitution. That does make some uncomfortable. But it makes me even more willing to support Brannon.
So slow tyranny is better than fast?
I say let it come, naked and swift. So all can see it for what it is. Let it not be layered on slowly, ‘boiling the frog’.
I did not, vote for Romney here in TN. Virgil Goode got my vote. If McCain and Romney are the best the GOP can field, they are dead to me.
Give me a conservative, not a Democrat in a Republican hat.
Believing that Romney care is suitable for the nation SHOWS spite for the Constitution.
Let me fix that for you.
“At least if Romney had won, we’d have Romneycare instead of Obamacare. And Romneycare just SOUNDS better doesnt it? And MAYBE facing other issues that would be portrayed as train wrecks by the media so they could hang them on a Republican for blame.”
With EITHER candidate, the train wrecks were coming. I voted Virgil Goode here in TN. If there is to be a train wreck, let it hang on a Liberal.
Ya know, I don’t expect Romney to run again or to be the Republican nominee in 2016.
But if he were to be, here on FR there would again be a furious effort to get Hillary elected, just the same as they did for 0bama in 2012.
It was really rather sickening to see so many “conservatives” work so hard for 0bama.
Romney would have done nothing good for our freedoms. He is nothing but Obama on a slower course. Look at his freaking record. Disgusting.
Anybody who says Romney was the lesser of two evils has his head so far in the sand that it is not coming out.
It really is sickening to see the GOP become Obama's party.
Romney signed his state’s assault weapons ban. He was in favor of abortion rights and homosexual perversion. Romney, Obama, there’s not much difference. A liberal is still a liberal.
Where do I send the check?
Agree.
Actually, it was antiConstitutional Romney who
supported Obama. Romney was a loser, protected
not by his brain, but by his WIFE.
In 1964 we were already in VietNam. The first Medal of Honor was given for action on July 6, 1964.
Not going to defend Romney--those days are over and if he runs again I will oppose him completely, but....
Your above quote is what I have heard/hear from a majority of FReepers over the past few years. In fact, far worse things have been posted, along with the smiling car salesman Romney with the gold tooth, the laughing out loud Romney signing legislation with Ted Kennedy pictures, etc., etc.
Heck, I was called upon to be banned when I said what you said (I would consider any politician...) I said we should hold our nose and vote for him, as it was still better than Obama. That one got me labeled a Romney-Lover and anti-American.
Bannon was/is mild compared to them!
You are correct, we were there. LBJ escalated it. I remember my Democrat aunt voted for LBJ based on her son being in the army and she didn’t want Goldwater to “go to war”. Those were totally disgusting times, the 60’s. Between the Bill Ayers, the hippies, the “peace” movement, the protests it was awful, IMHO.
Then add in the deaths of JFK, Bobby in June of 68, Martin Luther King in April 68, Kent State in 70 etc.
Sad times, but you are correct.
you’re saying that stage four cancer is preferable to stage one. I say that’s idiotic.
He would not have downsized the government, you are right about that. The above statement however is nonsensical and demonstrates you have no understanding of the difference between a state program and a Federal program. But you are enjoying the mental m-st-rbation of post facto Romney bashing, and I'd hate to get in the way of your mess
.so have at it.
Lets be honest. 1/3 of Freepers vowed not to vote for Romney, and didnt’. I mean, I did vote for the guy, but after the crap that followed, I refuse to vote for Jeb or Krispy in 2016.
When it comes to Brannon, I’m more concerned with how he’s going to vote in the senate and what is clear is that on EVERY big stand we took last year, he would have been there alongside our guys. Tillis would have been scheming with Mitch.
