If you want to know the back story of the Ukrainian revolution, The Soviet Story tells exactly what happened to Ukraine during the Soviet era - and a lot more.
It's the best educational film on the nature of communism, which should be shown to all high school students in America to immunize them against the lure of the “great” utopia. However, I doubt most teachers will do so in today's political climate.
This 2008 documentary tells the story of the anti-human ideology the way I see it myself. That was rather surprising, because in today's “progressive” media climate, such views are an anathema.
We definitely need a climate change!
That the author of this film and I share the same views is not a coincidence. EdvÄ«ns Šnore is a fellow ex-Soviet - a Latvian director who did a great job documenting the evils of communism with the support of some of his European colleagues.
The Soviet Story starts with a question I also raised many times: while the swastika is universally recognized as a symbol of evil and hate, why does the hammer-and-sickle emblem, which is just as bad, get a free pass? The answer apparently lies in the fact that there has never been a version of the Nuremberg Trial for communism, which still has a lot of sympathizers in high places of power around the world, including the United States.
When this film came out, one of our Cubists posted a trailer and a link to the DVD. Today the full movie can be seen online on YouTube and other video sites. While the English-language narrative is excellent, I was unable to find a version with English subtitles for occasional foreign-language segments, which make only about 5% of the movie. Those who would like to get the full 100% will have to buy the DVD, after all.

"I knew a lot about the Soviet regime (I grew up in a Communist country). Still, this movie is shocking and, as far as I know, genuine and based on facts, documents, and eyewitness reports. Naked, although shocking and thought-provoking truth. People interviewed in the movie are not some obscure conspiracy theorist -- they are known experts in history, international politics, and Soviet dealings (Davies, Sokolov, Bukovsky, or formed Soviet spy, now writer, Suvorov). The movie summarizes what is known about Nazi German atrocities along with Soviet Russian atrocities, what is known about the plan (followed by actions, such as Soviet invasions of Poland, Baltic republics, and Finland) of Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia to divide Europe, and also not widely known facts about collaboration between Gestapo and NKVD in the early years of the WWII, that resulted, for example, in shipping Jews who escaped the Nazis back to German-occupied territories, where most of them perished. Why does America seem hell bent on rushing to socialism?
Two possibilities:
One – many have forgotten the vestiges of its organized evil.
Two – The left with it’s socialist national agenda is now outright lying about who they really are.
I feel most sorry for those who escaped socialist nations only to have to deal with it here.
Reminds of a lady I knew in 96 who recently moved from Poland. She railed on after Clinton was reelected, "Why would you people vote for a socialist?" She went on and on about it and how life was in communist Poland. She described "toilet paper day" when they got in a supply of toilet paper and every family member could get one roll and you gathered up all the extended family, stood in line a long time and 'stocked up' on TP. .
Of course, the way the left does it is to simply LIE about their true ideology.
It should gather a considerable amount of suspicion a group that has to incessantly changed it’s labeling so much.
My 18 year old niece falls for all the left wing propaganda and thinks we consider the USSR evil because it allowed abortion. She is at UT-Austin learning all about white privilege and all sorts of other hogwash.
Friends of ours had a son who came home from college spouting all sorts of liberal crap.
When he was heading out socially Saturday night he asked what car he could take.
They said,”None-—capitalism bought those cars,take your bike.”
They stuck to their guns for his entire vacation.
