Europe starts food fight with U.S. over cheese names

Errico Auricchio produced cheese with his family in Italy until he brought his trade to the United States more than 30 years ago. Now the European Union is saying his cheese isn't authentic enough to carry a European name.

As part of trade talks, the EU wants to ban the use of names like Parmesan, feta and Gorgonzola on cheese made in the United States. The argument is that the American-made cheeses are shadows of the original European varieties and cut into sales and identity of the European cheeses.

Auricchio, president of Wisconsin-based BelGioioso Cheese Inc., says he has no idea what he would call his Parmesan if he had to find a new name.

"I Can't Believe It's Not Parmesan," he jokes.

“Not to fussy eaters.”

So you’re saying that you’re helplessly incapable of distinguishing between European vs. American cheeses? I sincerely doubt that. Personally, I take responsibility for my food choices. An EU food labeling regime is just another layer of big government. No thank you.

So do I. When I eat out, in most restaurants I avoid cheeses unless they feature cheese that's authentic and excellent quality. It's no problem taking responsibility when it's my purchase and I can read the label.

Well it’s Europe’s big government, not the USA’s. The USA has its own big government and needs no help from Europe.

I love authentic Velveeta. None of that store brand cheese product loaf, it has to be Velveeta.

Ah yes. Calcium citrate.

Well if the people want cheese food they will get cheese food!

I would almost think it would be possible to make custom cheese foods in the home kitchen, this way. So whatever flavor of cheese food you wanted, you could turn cheese into that. Roquefort cheese food? No problem.
