(Reuters) - Russian state media said Crimeans voted overwhelmingly to break with Ukraine and join Russia on Sunday, as Kiev accused Moscow of pouring forces into the peninsula and warned separatist leaders "the ground will burn under their feet".

RIA news agency said 93 percent backed annexation, citing an exit poll released as voting ended at 8 p.m. (1800 GMT). Another Russian agency said turnout was over 80 percent.

Caught in an East-West crisis reminiscent of the Cold War, Kiev said Russia's build-up of forces in the Black Sea region was in "crude violation" of an international treaty, and announced plans to arm and train 20,000 members of a newly-created National Guard to defend the nation.

You'd think President for Life Putin could get 100% support in this "plebiscite."

Given that there were many photos of the ballots showing that they had been pre-marked, I guess this is a victory for the “no” vote. lol

Wasn’t there a coup in Kiev? Seems like a referendum is more democratic than a coup.

“No, there wasn’t. (Say hello to Alex Jones from us.)”

Well, you don’t have to personalize the issue. I didn’t even know who Alex Jones was until i looked him up.

But, I imagine that if we stormed Washington and Obama fled the city and sought refuge in Chicago and the Congress replaced him in his absence, someone would be calling a coup. Isn’t that about what happened in Kiev?

What referendum? The supposed voting was a blatantly staged fraud with truckloads of premarked ballots and ballots with no option to vote in favor of ramining a territory of the Ukraine.

Those reports prove the election was massively rigged by Putin’s Russian regime, because the demographics alone make such an election result quite impossible. The Ukrainians make up something on the order of more than 25 percent of the population and the Crimean Tatars more than 12 percent of the population. The ethnic Russians are fewer than 58 percent of the population. Many ethnic Russians in the Crimea were loyal to the Ukraine and wanted to have nothing to do with Putin’s autocratic Russian government. At the very most a fair election result would have seen no more than a 45 percent vote in favor of annexing to Russia, and a far more likely result would have been around 9 to 12 percent in favor of Russian annexation.

Another way of knowing with absolute certainty the voting was rigged and fraudulent is by looking at the ballots. The ballots presented the voter with only two choices. One choice was for the Crimea to declare independence from the Ukraine. The other choice was for the Crimea to declare independence from the Ukraine and request Russian to annex the Crimea to Russia. The faked vote chose to become annexed to Russia. Nowhere on the ballot was there any option to vote in favor of remaining the territory of the Ukraine.

Excerpt:

Crimea's 1.5 million voters have two options: union with Russia or giving their region, which is controlled by pro-Kremlin politicians, the broad right to determine its own path and choose relations with whom it wants - including Moscow.

So, it's either secede from Ukraine or secede from Ukraine. What a choice! No option for 'Russia go home'.

Wish we could vote like that. I’d secede in a heartbeat.

Sorry, I associate the word ‘coup’ with this radio blabbermouth, whom I only know from reports here.

Anyway, you are asking a good question. Was it a coup or not? The president fled and the parliament replaced him. By the way, there is a video on Youtube showing his men packing his possessions in trucks BEFORE he signed that agreement with the two foreign ministers which was never observed.

“Nowhere on the ballot was there any option to vote in favor of remaining the territory of the Ukraine.”

I’m pretty sure Putin already decided that was not a choice. Better without bloodshed, though.

I think you are barking. Crimea is Russian. 60% ethnic Russians. 12% Tartars. Less than a 1/4 Ukrainians who are split on East West preference about equal. They hate the West.
