Obama imposes sanctions on Russian officials, ousted Ukrainian president

KIEV, Ukraine— Obama on Monday imposed sanctions on 11 Russian and Ukrainian officials blamed for Russia's military incursion into Crimea, including two top aides to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The sanctions were the most visible sign of U.S. anger at Russia's attempt to absorb the Crimea region of southern Ukraine, reflecting the deepest plunge in U.S.-Russian relations since the Cold War.

The sanctions came in an executive order signed by Obama a day after a Crimea referendum on Sunday aimed at allowing Russia to annex the autonomous region, a vote that the United States says was illegal and would never be recognized by Washington.

During a White House press briefing, Obama warned that continued Russian military intervention in Ukraine would only increase Russia's isolation and exact a greater toll on its economy.

"If Russia continues to interfere in Ukraine, we stand ready to impose further sanctions," he said.

Depending upon the propaganda machine and who it is that applies the sanctions, sanctions can be viewed as an act of war or as a friendly nudge to go do the right thing.

The world at large has become a victim to the science of propaganda and manipulating public opinion. The only thing we the people will ever know for certain is that we don’t know anything for certain.

This coming from a guy who jailed an American citizen for exercising his first amendment right of free speech and then running cover for the real perps of Benghazi.

Hey Vlad... Now is the time to act. Snatch all the real estate you want.

I agree. We have the right not to admit any one inimical to our interests.

But it works both ways.

Putin's reply to Obama's "sanctions" was fast:

MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree on Monday recognising Ukraine's Crimea region as a sovereign state.

We have laws? Who knew!
Read the entire article obama’s executive order- it goes beyond the simple “principle” you suggest:

“Senior administration officials who briefed reporters on the penalties said they were the most comprehensive sanctions applied to Russia since the end of the Cold War.

A senior official said Obama’s order clears the way for sanctions on people associated with the Russian arms industry and targets “the personal wealth of cronies” of the Russian leadership.”

But then- this guy is running drone assassinations that are killing civilians in at least 3 countries , and ran a 40 day military air war against Libya with no input from Congress, and was prepared to launch US cruise missiles into Syria ..... on his own

so ...why not declare whatever means he chooses against the worlds 2d largest nuclear power. After all they are rational actors just like us about retaliation, right?

Besides why defer to the peoples’ Senate when Obama has such topflight foreign policy pros at the US State Department retooling Hillary’s reset buttons

One thing we do know for certain. Our Government no longer works for the people. We are a place that has no moral authority anymore. Listening to Obama today embarrassed me. Everything he said he said as a total hypocrite that doesn’t practice what he preaches. That is why people flick him off. We are run by global thugs who operate for entities that want to force us into a world order we won’t want. We sit, they decide. The truth no longer matters.

What can anyone expect when all the players on the board are thugs and criminals?

Of course. Putin is just helping Crimea achieve the will of the people, freeing them from the oppressive West Ukraine government. How can the UN et al not support such “democracy”?

And of course, the new sovereign Crimean state will demand recognition as such from the UN.

And of course, the UN-recognized sovereign state of Crimea will then vote to join Russia - you know, just like Texas did.

Putin can play the “one-off rationalization game” as well or better than any Leftist, tying his opponents in knots by doing things the right way, just taking the result in the other direction. Now Putin has Obama on record imposing “bill of attainer” decrees outside his own empowered position, opposing democracy, opposing the rule of international law (whatever the he11 that is), defending oppression, stealing money, and generally looking like an idiot - while at the same time everyone knows exactly what Putin is doing and are powerless to oppose it, pissed off at the one person who SHOULD HAVE ACTED but instead played - and lost - the childish game of “community organizer”.

“Senior administration officials who briefed reporters on the penalties said they were the most comprehensive sanctions applied to Russia since the end of the Cold War.

If you believe that, I have a bridge in Brooklyn to sell to you. These "senior administrative officials" are trying to portray Obama as a tough guy, but the reality is that these sanctions are toothless and meaningless. It is more of a sign of weakness than anything else.

But then- this guy is running drone assassinations that are killing civilians in at least 3 countries , and ran a 40 day military air war against Libya with no input from Congress, and was prepared to launch US cruise missiles into Syria ..... on his own

Bush started the drone program and Obama just expanded it. I have no problem how we kill the bastards who are bent on killing us, here and abroad. Obama led from behind on Libya. The EU forced him into it. The EU wanted Libyan oil to continue flowing and they wanted to stop the exodus of Libyans and other North Africans into Italy and eventually the rest of Europe.

so ...why not declare whatever means he chooses against the worlds 2d largest nuclear power. After all they are rational actors just like us about retaliation, right?

I believe the Russians are rational when it comes to nuclear war. They respect our three legged stool of deterrents, i.e., land-based, submarine, and air. They know that they would be totally destroyed if they launched an attack against us. I am more concerned about non-state actors getting a nuclear capability making it more difficult to retaliate.

Besides why defer to the peoples’ Senate when Obama has such topflight foreign policy pros at the US State Department retooling Hillary’s reset buttons

If the truth were known, the State Department has little impact on foreign policy formulation. It is a storefront operation for the intelligence community and the NSC.

These sanctions aren’t meant to harm anyone in Russia, they are simply for TV Network consumption.

Obama got to be the biggest joke, in Americas long history. Anyone who voted for him should think about admitting themselves to a mental hospital. He has just totally destroyed America in such a short time.Nobody takes him serious. What is more troublesome if we had elections tomorrow the democratic party would vote him back in again.
