The Ukrainians have THREE choices:

1. Let their tanks, and troops get destroyed, and killed.

2. Destroy their armor, pull the troops back..fight an unconventional war against the Russians.

3. Pull the tanks back. Trade land for time.

The Ukranians are taking a defensive stand with the trenches and tanks. An aggressive stand would have them "invading" Crimea.

If the Ukranians are to defend their freedom, it will likely be by a combination of both conventional and unconventional means.
