UPDATE, 12:07 p.m. ET: Russian forces are reportedly pushing back the press at the scene:

Ukrainian troops said Tuesday that they were being attacked by Russian forces at a base in Crimea’s main city, Simferopol, the Interfax news agency reported, according to Reuters.

“One Ukrainian serviceman has been wounded in the neck and collarbone. Now we have barricaded ourselves on the second floor. The headquarters has been taken and the commander has been taken. They want us to put down our arms but we do not intend to surrender,” a military spokesperson reportedly said.

“We are being stormed.” Share: “We are being stormed. We have about 20 people here and about 10 to 15 others, including women,” an unidentified serviceman told Fifth Channel television, according to Reuters. “One of our officers was wounded during the attack, grazed in the neck and arm.”

This is a developing news story. Updates will be added.

A military “storming” would certainly involve a hell of a lot more dead than just one.......
Yes, but Putin knows a lot about various active measures and constant armed heckling and sniping by uniformed but ‘unknown parties’ would be a good tactic to unsettle a garrison that is already effectively in enemy territory and pretty much cut off from their country. The Russians don’t seek a war but the evacuation of the Crimea by all Ukrainian military forces. If they keep up ratcheting up the pressure they probably will get the desired results.

“No conservative would support”

But lots of conservatives apparently support things like self-determination for all (self-identified) peoples, a profoundly unconservative idea.

What is happening in Eastern Europe is pure progressive Wilsonianism, and real conservatives should hate it.

Wow. lol - what international law would that be? And what neighbors are going to help? Oh, that’s right the Russians who invaded a sovereign nation. The Russians will “help” themselves to stolen territory.

Yep, most of the news reports are BS.

The best one so far was the one with the headline about Russian book burnings because some Ukrainian in the suburbs used a book to start a fire.

‘if the Mexican army invaded Southern California to “protect Spanish speaking peoples”, then promptly conducted a referendum giving Americans in those areas a choice between joining Mexico or having a “special” autonomous relationship with the US’
That is why the La Raza/Atzlan types want Mex citizens in the US to keep voting in Mex elections irrespective of their citizenship. The goal is to get a sort of Atzlan which is an ‘autonomous ethnic area’ in parts of the SW. That is what the Crimea is, an ‘autonomous republic’ within the Ukraine. It is now seceding in stages. The La Raza types want ‘autonomous areas’ with Mexican police and soldiers within California or Arizona or Texas while still part of the US for purposes of drawing benefits.

how can it be an act of war? those soldiers are disobeying a direct order from their democratically elected commander and chief, who was forced out of Kiev by a mob, but none the less is still the legitimate leader of Ukraine.

Notice the word reportedly sprinkled throughout the story. See my tagline for an explanation.

And what, pray tell, was your position on Slovenian and Croatian independence in 1992?

We (NATO) set the precedent so the Germans could get access to the Adriatic. Now the Russians want Crimea and used the exact procedure we set forward in Yugoslavia. No need for “what-ifs.”

All you have to do is put down any weapons and walk out.

Really?? Going French while facing Russians? Ever consider the possibility these soldiers have been stuck in that region since all this began?

These silly “sanctions” against a handful of Russian government officials are a complete farce.

I agree, and they've probably been pre-arranged between Obama and Putin, so Obama could appear to be "doing something" without actually affecting Russia to any extent. Post-election flexibility and all.

Russian dictators can always find people in the west to defend them, excuse them, praise them. It must be a gift.

Will the Marxists around Obama and pulling his strings ever learn that when it comes to responding to foreign provocations with red lines or 11 of you guys can’t go to Las Vegas a few months that such actions make them (and US) look silly and small and timid and only encourage and embolden men like Putin?!

For certain, it would be wiser to do nothing!

Your example is not fanciful. That is EXACTLY the reason not to allow millions of illegal and unasimilated Mexicans into this country. Of course they can eventually do this to us.

Bingo, and all these isolationists would permit a nuclear armed Russia to reemerge as a new Hitler or Stalin in Europe, something we cannot afford while also contending with China.

Obama is an idiot and Putin should have been stopped before this happened.

No one is suggesting we need to send in troops and start WWIII, but yeah Europe matters to us.
