Kiev (AFP) - Ukraine's acting president on Wednesday said Crimea's separatist leaders had three hours to release the detained head of the ex-Soviet state's navy or face "an adequate response".

Acting president Oleksandr Turchynov said in a statement that "unless Admiral (Sergiy) Gayduk and all the other hostages -- both military and civilian ones -- are released, the authorities will carry out an adequate response... of a technical and technological nature."

Ehhhhh? Somehow I don’t think that this demand is going to be honored in quite the way the Ukrainian President envisions. If we know one thing it’s that Putin will not be backed into a corner.

An adequate response would be a dramatic escalation.

This is not a joke.

This won’t be an Obama type response.

This guy will make good on his threat.

Release them to the Ukranian side of the border? That works, doesn’t it?

The Associated Press ‏@AP 1m

BREAKING: Ukrainian official: Government making plan to pull troops from Crimea as Russia takes control.

Now, THAT's quite a response.

I know there are a certain type of FReepers, call them the Putinista ones, who are dearly hoping that Russia will unleash a punitive war against the upstarts in Ukraine who dared to defy Putin. They’re keen for blood. Let the bare-chested, man-boobed Putin show that he still has the will to inflict pain and suffering on the Ukrainian people, like the Tsars of old, like Putin’s KGB predecessors who starved millions of Ukrainians for Stalin. Then, they can all have a grand laugh and say how swell Putin really is.
