Moscow signals concern for Russians in Estonia

Russia signaled concern on Wednesday at Estonia's treatment of its large ethnic Russian minority, comparing language policy in the Baltic state with what it said was a call in Ukraine to prevent the use of Russian.

Russia has defended its annexation of Ukraine's Crimea peninsula by arguing it has the right to protect Russian-speakers outside its borders, so the reference to linguistic tensions in another former Soviet republic comes at a highly sensitive moment.

The one thing Russia may not have counted on is the Poles. I cannot imagine Poles standing idly by while they see their brethren in the Baltics being threatened.

What’s Poland supposed to do if Estonia won’t fight?

Narva would be a huge mess. A dumphole town on the Russian border full of malcontent ethnic Russians. Anybody with ambition got out of that place long ago. Most of those left would be happy to see the Russian bear back.

The other issue is blackmail. A lot of the Baltic leaders were ambitious during Soviet times. Putin no doubt has files on them all. It’s not safe to assume they are solid patriots.

Why not? Go get Georgia and other regions as well. Barry won’t do a thing.

Estonia = NATO member. The US and Europe are treaty-bound to defend it. If they do not, then no law should be considered in force.

And who do we have in the White House? Neville Obama. All he needs is the umbrella and the bowler hat.

“All he needs is the umbrella and the bowler hat.”

Bicycle and bike helmet will do just fine for an updated, 21st century appeasement icon.

No, I'm sure they'll still have it in them to send out SWAT teams and death squads to enforce Obamacare.

Ethnic Russians in the Baltics replaced millions of native Lithuanians, Latvians, and Estonians deported or killed by Stalin. The percentage of Russians is by far the lowest in Lithuania.

I think this is for two reasons. First, the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact included Lithuania in the Nazi zone, but she was occupied by the Soviets. Second, the Lithuanian partisans (Forest Brothers) killed many Soviet emigres as they arrived to displace the natives. This was a disincentive to future migration.

Once a country becomes nuclear, there is very little that can be done if they want something.

Just wait until Iran comes out of the closet with a few hundre working bombs.

But did you ever hear or see any American conservatives dancing to that tune?

None, but it was someone else who did.

The bronze soldier statue was not sent to a dump but was instead relocated to Tallinn Military cemetery.

A Treasury Department adviser who returned after several years in Estonia, reported that there are no serious ethnic conflicts in Estonia.

The statue was a prominent landmark in Tallinn. The Russians considered the move a downgrade and there was unrest. There wasn’t any conflict in Crimea until a couple weeks ago, btw.

Don’t confuse Tallinn with a backwater like Narva. You might as well be in Pskov there. It’s basically Russia there and ripe to be manipulated by Putin.

Yeah. Sad to say, I’m not sure Obama would even defend Alaska. The clowns we got in Washington these days are too busy keeping us divided over this issue or that. They take our sovereignty for granted, we don’t need to unified and that no other country would dare attack.

Sorry. Tallinn ain’t Russia. The Russian areas are elsewhere, and Tallinn speaks Estonian.

The few Russians who live and work in Tallinn speak Estonian at work.

Sorry, that’s what I meant. Tallinn is Estonian and cosmopolitan. Outposts like Narva are heavily Russian influenced. Putin will exploit that at a time of his choosing.
