I am stunned. 64 posts into this thread, and no one has yet defended Putin or said it’s none of our business, on the basis that the Estonians are evil EU or Nazis. (Actually, they have a mostly Milton Friedman / free market / reward hard work / competetive economy that the US would do well to emulate.)
Estonia is a NATO member, Ukraine isn’t.
Membership has its’ privileges.

Therein lies the great danger - much greater than events preceding WW1 or WW2. With the US (and most of its people) proven dishonorable / selfish and worthless, and its protective umbrella discredited (or becoming so fast), any country capable of going nuclear doesn't really have much choice but to do so. With many nuclear powers in the world, the chance of a miscalculation leading to a significant nuclear exchange becomes a virtual certainty.

So, we should not honor our Security Assurances (plural) to the Ukraine, in which we promised our protection in return for Ukraine sending its 5000 nukes to Russia for destruction?
The signal that sends guarantees a global nuclear arms race and that in turn virtually guarantees a nuclear war down the line. Few have learned the lessons of the 1930’s - 1940’s, but this time it’s with nukes.

Well, yes. Quite right. What needs to happen is, the Europeans need to man up. Perhaps France, Germany, the Italians, and any of several other European countries should raise a force to defend against Russian aggression. If they care. I am very tired of the U.S. doing all of the dirty work and then getting kicked in the balls for it by folks from the very same nations that we are expected to defend.

Does anyone on FR know of any reputable studies as to the radiation effects of a medium scale (say, 100 nukes involved) nuclear exchange? I believe I can reasonably estimate the effects of, say, a Taiwan / China exchange, or a Saudi / Iranian exchange, of that magnitude, but would really like to hear it from an expert. Most analysis I’ve seen was either for a single bomb, or a catastrophic “nuclear winter” type Russia / US war.
Obviously, the location of the dust-up and the prevailing winds would be crucial, but maybe the safest analysis from the US standpoint would be to assume “worst case” winds from Eastern Asia, over the Pacific. Say, a “nuclear pineapple express.”
The information I have from an adviser to Estonia, who spent years there, is that the Russians in eastern Estonia are very satisfied living there - unlike the Russians in Crimea. Disturbances did occur in Tallinn when the statue was moved. However, there were none in Narva.
They are working on a new set of talking points... be patient. Its tough work defending an expansionist thug.
